The BEng (Hons) Civil and Transportation Engineering with Foundation Year gives you a supportive, structured start to your studies if you're new to the subject, returning to education after time away, or simply didn't leave school with the qualifications the standard route asks for. From your very first term, you'll be based at our Springfield site with full access to modern teaching spaces and laboratories.

The foundation year isn't a watered-down taster — it's a genuine bridge into degree-level engineering, building your mathematics, science and academic skills in smaller, more supportive groups before you join the main BEng. Once you progress, you follow exactly the same accredited degree as our standard route, taught by the same staff, in the same facilities.

This course carries accreditation from four professional bodies — ICE, IStructE, CIHT and IHE — and for three of them (IStructE, CIHT and IHE), this particular route is accredited towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, not just Incorporated Engineer. That makes the Foundation Year route a genuinely strong long-term choice, not simply an easier way in.

What happens on the course?

This is a four-year route (or eight years part-time), with your foundation year designed to prepare you thoroughly for everything that follows.

  • Foundation Year: you build core knowledge in Introductory Engineering Mathematics, Science & Physics for Engineering, Academic Writing & Communication Skills, and Research & Engineering Problem Solving — developing both subject knowledge and the study skills you'll need at degree level.
  • Year 1: you move into the standard BEng, covering engineering mathematics, mechanics of materials and surveying and digital technologies, alongside an extended induction module tailored to civil engineering.
  • Year 2: you specialise further in structural design, soil mechanics and geotechnical applications, and transportation engineering and design, while building your professional development portfolio.
  • Year 3: you complete the degree with a team-based Capstone Design Project and independent Final Year Dissertation, alongside hydraulics and water engineering, and transport planning and modelling.

Foundation-year teaching is deliberately hands-on and closely supported — smaller group sessions, structured feedback and staff guidance help you transition smoothly into higher education. From Year 1 onwards, teaching follows the same blended approach as the standard degree: in-person lectures and laboratory work, supported by online resources through the university's virtual learning environment, with a genuinely varied mix of assessment methods across the whole course.

By the end of your foundation year, you'll be able to:

  • apply core mathematical and scientific principles to introductory engineering problems
  • use appropriate academic sources and research methods for engineering study
  • write clearly and communicate technical ideas in an academic and professional register
  • reflect on your progress and set realistic goals as you move into degree-level study

 

Placements on the course

A foundation year start doesn't mean a lighter placement offer — every student on this course is guaranteed a professional placement, on exactly the same terms as students who join the standard three-year route. It's real-world exposure and proven experience for your CV, built into your degree rather than left for you to arrange yourself.

  • Short duration: a condensed, work-like experience with an employer in the civil, transportation or infrastructure sector
  • Academic integration: linked to your coursework, assessments or professional development modules once you're in the main degree
  • Project-based learning: you'll work on a specific task or piece of research set by a host organisation

Civil and transportation engineering is all about creating, improving and protecting the built environment. Civil and transportation engineers contribute to the design and build of infrastructure that is sustainable and that provides the facilities for day-to-day life of individuals.

 

They carry out impact assessment and undertake sustainability and feasibility studies to safeguard the sustainability of projects.

 

There are many significant employment opportunities in civil and transportation engineering with graduates working for contractors, consultants, local authorities, government and public bodies, the armed forces, and academic and research establishments. 

 

Civil and transportation engineering also offers opportunities to work both on a national and international basis on a variety of exciting environmental and infrastructure projects. Graduates may wish to continue their studies at Masters or Doctorate level. This may either be in a technical context or a more broadening context such as project management or construction law.

 

The BEng (Hons) Civil and Transportation Engineering provides a sound basis from which to develop a career, and progress to Incorporated Engineer (IEng) with further experience, or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with appropriate further learning and experience.

You'll be based at our Springfield site throughout — Europe's largest construction centre of excellence — giving you access to modern laboratories, workshops and studios from your very first foundation-year term.
This route is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators and, through IStructE, CIHT and IHE, offers a route towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status — giving foundation-year starters a genuinely ambitious long-term professional pathway, not just an alternative entry point.

By the time you complete the full degree, you'll be able to:

  • apply engineering principles to complex, real-world problems, having built up to this from foundation-level maths and science
  • evaluate technical literature and data critically, using research skills first introduced during your foundation year
  • design civil and transportation engineering solutions that properly account for health and safety, environmental and commercial factors

    Prepare for Foundation Pathway: - We will consider applicants who have not achieved level 3 qualifications if you have a keen interest in this subject area or hold relevant experience. To receive an offer through this route you will be required to successfully attend and pass a Prepare for Foundation event. This is a one-day programme which is designed to assess your keen interest or recent experience in the subject, through a written assessment and a variety of activities.
