What happens on the course?

The course is structured to build your confidence and technical ability step by step — moving from core engineering fundamentals in Year 1 to specialist, industry-facing practice by Year 3.

  • Year 1: you build a strong foundation in engineering mathematics, mechanics of materials, and surveying and digital technologies, alongside an extended induction module designed specifically to help you settle into university and engineering study.
  • Year 2: you specialise in structural design, soil mechanics and geotechnical applications, and transportation engineering and design, while a dedicated professional development module starts building your CV, interview and networking skills.
  • Year 3: you bring it all together in a team-based Capstone Design Project and an independent Final Year Dissertation, alongside modules in hydraulics and water engineering, and transport planning and modelling — producing a complete, costed engineering solution to a live-style brief.

Teaching blends in-person lectures, laboratory sessions and fieldwork with online resources through the university's virtual learning environment, so you can revisit worked examples and prepare for assessments in your own time. Across the degree you'll be assessed through a genuinely varied mix — technical reports, laboratory work, presentations, design software tasks, examinations and your dissertation — rather than relying on one style of assessment throughout.

Civil and transportation engineering is all about creating, improving and protecting the built environment. Civil and transportation engineers contribute to the design and build of infrastructure that is sustainable and that provides the facilities for day-to-day life of individuals.

They carry out impact assessment and undertake sustainability and feasibility studies to safeguard the sustainability of projects.

There are many significant employment opportunities in civil and transportation engineering with graduates working for contractors, consultants, local authorities, government and public bodies, the armed forces, and academic and research establishments. 

Civil and transportation engineering also offers opportunities to work both on a national and international basis on a variety of exciting environmental and infrastructure projects. Graduates may wish to continue their studies at Masters or Doctorate level. This may either be in a technical context or a more broadening context such as project management or construction law.

The BEng (Hons) Civil and Transportation Engineering provides a sound basis from which to develop a career, and progress to Incorporated Engineer (IEng) with further experience, or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with appropriate further learning and experience.

At Wolverhampton, you'll be taught by a blend of research-active academics and experienced practising engineers, many of whom hold professional qualifications from the same bodies that accredit this course.

Our civil engineering team has strong, long-standing links with employers and professional bodies across the sector, formalised through our Industrial Advisory Board, which helps shape the course content, provides guest lectures and organises site visits.
You'll be based at our Springfield site — Europe's largest construction centre of excellence — giving you access to modern laboratories, workshops and studios from your very first week, rather than only in your final year.

This course is accredited to IEng status by the Joint Board of Moderators, giving you a clear route to becoming an Incorporated Engineer and, with a Master's degree and further experience, eligibility for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

By graduation, you'll be able to:

  • apply engineering principles to complex, real-world problems, informed by an awareness of new developments across civil and transportation engineering
  • evaluate technical literature and data critically, assessing its relevance and reliability before using it in your own work
