This course has been designed to incorporate internationally recognised skills from professional accounting and finance bodies, giving you a head start in qualifying as an accountant. You’ll learn essential theory through taught academic study, as well as practical training in the use of accounting software. You’ll also develop key analytical, report writing and further employability skills designed to help you to better adapt to the rapidly changing work environment.

All students have the opportunity to take an optional placement year, providing valuable workplace experience in an accounting or finance role to significantly improve your employability upon graduation. During your studies, you will have the opportunity to meet with accounting and business practitioners through guest lectures and other special events.

This provides enhanced employment opportunities in the financial sector, providing a fast route towards gaining a professional accountancy qualification. Specifically, through exemptions from Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualifications, Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), and Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

These accountancy qualifications are internationally recognised, giving successful students the opportunity to broaden their accounting careers on an international scale. Our BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance course is designed to give you a head start in your career, with the skills, knowledge and practical experience you need to follow your ambition of becoming an accountant, finance professional or business manager. 

You’ll develop skills and experience in a variety of ways. Our Business School provides students with the opportunity to thrive both academically and professionally, setting you up for success in your future career. The full-time course option is taught over a 3-year period and split into 18 core modules. These cover everything from essential accounting and finance skills and an introduction to business law, right through to financial management and auditing. 

Studying accounting and finance with the Business School gives you a head start in your career by offering:

Professional body exemptions - The course provides the opportunity to gain exemptions for Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). This can increase your employability as you will be a significant way towards becoming a fully qualified accountant.

Internships - Gain valuable work experience in an accounting and finance role with an internship. We offer the opportunity to take an internship (sandwich placement) as part of the programme of study. You’ll receive full support in preparing and securing internships from our dedicated support team.  

Study abroad - You can choose to undertake one semester or a full year to study our accounting and finance course abroad. Our Business School partners with several EU countries, giving you the opportunity to gain a professional accounting and finance qualification abroad as part of your programme of study.

Students will become familiar with key aspects of the English Legal System; the law of contract, tort law (in particular the tort of negligence), employment law and company law in the context of the business organisation. It is therefore a very practical module designed to give students a working knowledge of UK tax.

The module will also investigate and evaluate possible alternative techniques and practices which are proposed as solutions to current accounting problems.

The ethical background and regulatory framework of auditors and the corporate governance requirements for their clients will be considered. Finally, the use of a variety of audit techniques to collect reliable and sufficient audit evidence to support appropriate audit report opinions will be considered.

The construction of efficient portfolios and capital structure is included which necessitate the understanding of efficient sources of and management of finance as well as risk assessment of a wide range of financial assets which ensures that the wealth of organisations are not eroded by poor investment decisions. Students must have studied a minimum of two years post GCSE level. However, it is expected that some applicants will be mature students with work experience, who wish to further their career development.
