At the University of Wolverhampton, our BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree gives you a direct route into this world: an Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) accredited course, hands-on laboratory training from day one, and a supportive learning environment built for students who want a career that matters — in the NHS, in research, or across the wider life sciences sector.

Please note: If you are interested in completing a placement year in an NHS laboratory or aim to pursue a career as a Biomedical Scientist, you would be strongly advised to join the course in September rather than January. Students joining the programme in January cannot be considered for an NHS laboratory placement year.

A curriculum aligned to IBMS professional standards. The course is designed to meet the requirements of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), giving you a qualification recognised across the profession and a pathway towards HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist, subject to further professional training.

Specialist diagnostic and research laboratories. You'll work in facilities built to reflect real clinical and research practice — developing skills in haematology, microbiology, immunology, clinical biochemistry and molecular biology using modern diagnostic equipment, not just generic teaching labs.

A course shaped by current research and clinical practice. You're taught by research-active staff working across diabetes, cancer, microbiology, physiology and molecular medicine, with close links to local NHS hospitals that keep what you learn directly relevant to current medical practice.

What happens on the course?

You'll learn through a blend of lectures, practical laboratory sessions, workshops, tutorials and applied case-study work — building steadily from foundational science towards independent, research-level investigation.

Year 1 (Level 4): You'll build your scientific foundations in Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology, Infection and Immunity, and Molecular and Cell Biology, alongside Succeeding at University in Medical Sciences — a dedicated module to help you settle into university-level study and lab practice.

Year 2 (Level 5): You'll move into applied clinical science with Haematology and Transfusion Science, Disease Detection and Monitoring, Diagnostic Pathways, and Professional Development in Medical Sciences, working with clinical case studies and real diagnostic scenarios.

Year 3 (Level 6): You'll specialise further with Molecular Cell Pathology, Integrated Pathobiology, and Microbiology and Public Health, and complete your own independent Research Project — designing and running an original piece of biomedical research from start to finish.

Across all three years, you'll:

  • Develop hands-on competence in modern laboratory and diagnostic techniques
  • Apply your knowledge to clinical case studies and research-informed scenarios
  • Engage in independent and group project work, building both scientific and professional skills

Assessment

Assessment combines laboratory reports, case study analyses, presentations, portfolios and written exams — a mix designed to develop your scientific writing, data interpretation and communication skills, while spreading your workload sensibly across the year. Because this course meets IBMS professional requirements, clinical specialism modules (including Haematology & Transfusion Science, Disease Detection & Monitoring, Diagnostic Pathways, Integrated Pathobiology, Molecular Cell Pathology, Microbiology & Public Health, and the Research Project) must each be passed individually — reflecting the competency standards expected of a working biomedical scientist.

Selection for this opportunity is highly competitive and provides an excellent opportunity for you to gain both valuable laboratory experience and complete the Institute of Biomedical Science’s Registration Training Portfolio, before continuing into your final year. Here, BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science students will undertake a research project and also study key clinical laboratory disciplines, including cellular pathology and clinical genetics, haematology and transfusion science, clinical biochemistry and immunology, and medical microbiology.

GCSE English Language at grade C/4 or above. Equivalents accepted for English GCSE requirements only  

If you do not hold a GCSE grade C/4+ in Mathematics you will be strongly advised to complete your Mathematics GCSE alongside your studies at the University.

Students wishing to take a hospital laboratory placement as part of the Applied Biomedical Science route must have GCSE Maths at C/4 or above or, Level 2 Essential / Key Skill in Application of Number or an equivalent mathematics qualification.

  • BTEC L3 Extended Diploma or OCR Cambridge L3 Technical Extended Diploma - grades MMM in Applied Science
  • Access to HE Diploma: 45 Level 3 credits at Merit, 36 of these must be in Science
  • T Level - P - Core grade needs to be C or above in a Science based subject
