  • A flexible route into a healthcare profession: study full-time (3 years) or part-time (6 years), with an optional sandwich placement between Level 5 and Level 6 if you want extended, embedded workplace experience.
  • Genuine specialism choice: rather than being placed on a fixed pathway, you choose whether to specialise in Cardiac Physiology or Respiratory and Sleep Physiology as you progress into Level 5.

What happens on the course?

Teaching builds your knowledge step by step. You'll start with the core science of anatomy, physiology and cell biology in Year 1, alongside a foundation in both cardiac and respiratory/sleep physiology, before choosing your specialism and progressing to advanced pathophysiology, diagnostics and clinical data interpretation.

You'll learn through a blend of:

Assessment is designed to build your confidence as well as test it. You'll be assessed through a mix of case studies, lab reports, presentations, essays and exams, spread across the year and supported by practice opportunities such as quizzes, draft submissions and peer feedback — so you always know what's expected before it counts.

In your final year, you'll complete an independent research project in your chosen specialism, developing the critical thinking, data analysis and scientific communication skills that research careers and postgraduate study demand.

Potential Career Paths

You will be prepared to enter a career as an associate healthcare practitioner in cardiac physiology or respiratory and sleep physiology in a hospital department dependent on your choice of specialist discipline. During your employment you will be able to build up a portfolio of recognition, which may allow you to become a practitioner.  The award provides an ideal background for graduate entry into the NHS Scientist Training Programme. Opportunities will then also exist, to progress to higher levels within the healthcare science career framework, taking on responsibility for higher level diagnostic tests, training, and management roles.  You will also be equipped at the end of your studies to apply for a role in any career which requires a physiological science degree for example teaching, medical and pharmaceutical sales representatives, research etc.

GCSE English and Maths at grade C+/4. No equivalences are accepted.

  • A Levels AA or BCD to include Biology passed with minimum grade B
  • BTEC L3 Extended Diploma or OCR Cambridge L3 Technical Extended Diploma in Applied Science - grades MMM
  • Access to HE Diploma Full Award (60 credits), with 45 Level 3 credits of which 36 must be in Science, with at least 27 at Distinction and the rest at Merit. No pass grades are accepted
  • T Level - P - Core grade needs to be C or above
