BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching (Top up)

This module is designed to prepare you for employment within the sport coaching sector by developing your coaching leadership, professional practice, and employability skills. You will critically explore coaching philosophy, leadership approaches, and pedagogical decision-making, applying these within an applied coaching context. The module provides opportunities for you to plan, deliver, and evaluate coaching practice, enabling you to demonstrate your ability to lead sessions and respond to the needs of participants. Through structured reflection, you will critically analyse your coaching behaviours, leadership style, and the effectiveness of your practice in relation to relevant theory. Alongside applied coaching, you will engage in authentic employability activities, including the preparation of a tailored job application and participation in a professional interview. These tasks are designed to reflect real-world recruitment processes within the coaching industry. By the end of the module, you will have developed a coherent coaching identity and the professional skills required to secure and succeed in graduate-level coaching roles.

This module aims to provide students with the skills and experience to conduct coaching sessions with diverse populations. You will attend, observe and plan to deliver coaching sessions and  use reflection to enable continuing development.

Understanding how to measure and demonstrate impact is essential for anyone working in sport and physical activity. This module introduces you to the key concepts, frameworks, and methodologies used to monitor and evaluate sport-related projects. You will explore how organisations use evidence to assess effectiveness, inform decision-making, and secure future funding. Through case studies and practical workshops, you will learn how to design an appropriate monitoring and evaluation approach for a real-world initiative, using both qualitative and quantitative methods to collect and interpret data. You will consider how evidence can be used to improve practice, communicate value, and support the sustainability of sport and community programmes. Ethical and professional issues will be embedded throughout, encouraging you to reflect on your responsibilities as a practitioner-researcher and the importance of conducting evaluation with integrity, respect, and inclusivity. This module will also prepare you for your Professional Project, helping you to develop the skills and confidence to plan and carry out small-scale research or evaluation within your chosen area of interest. By the end of this module, you will be able to connect theory with practice and demonstrate the real-world impact of sport and physical activity.

This module aims to provide you with opportunities& nbsp;to hone your skills& nbsp;to conduct inclusive coaching sessions. You will have opportunities to explore different approaches to coaching and work with a range of participants in various settings and capacities. You will apply newly acquired sports science and pedagogy knowledge in sessions that& nbsp;are& nbsp;underpinned by your coaching philosophy. You will practice reflection to enable continuing& nbsp;professional development and continue to develop skills in mentoring as well as sports coaching.

The aim of this module is to challenge students to use analytical and problem-solving techniques to deal with complex and multi-dimensional sports coaching related problems.

The module intends to allow flexibility when further developing your applied skills relevant to the& nbsp;sport& nbsp;and physical activity industry. You will have opportunities to conduct self evaluation and identify a focus area for development (coaching, analysis, sport science support, etc). You will have face to face and online learning opportunities, but the majority of your work will be conducted in a placement. Your placement and chosen area of development should be discussed with your module tutor& nbsp;who will facilitate the process and support you when needed in your independent work.& nbsp;Much of your work on this module will contribute to the Wolverhampton Enterprise and Employability Award.

This module provides you with the opportunity to complete a short, independent professional project within your chosen subject area, supported by the guidance of an academic supervisor. You will investigate a topic relevant to your degree pathway, drawing on appropriate research, theory, and professional evidence to deepen your understanding and inform your project work. A range of topic areas that can be investigated will be provided for you, and you will choose one to focus your professional project on. Depending on your academic discipline, your project may take the form of an applied investigation, evaluation, resource development, intervention design, or practice-based study. Throughout the process, you will be expected to plan and manage your work independently, demonstrating initiative, organisation, and critical thinking. You will engage in regular supervisory meetings to receive feedback, refine your ideas, and ensure your project is academically robust, ethically sound, and professionally relevant. Reflection is embedded across the module, enabling you to evaluate your decision-making, professional conduct, and the impact of your work. By completing this module, you will consolidate your subject knowledge, strengthen your research and project management skills, and demonstrate your readiness for graduate-level employment or further study across sport, health, education, and exercise-related professions.

The Professional Project is the culmination of your undergraduate degree course which will enable you to work independently in an area that excites and interests you. The Professional Project enables you to engage with a substantial programme of independent study which allows you to define and explore in some depth a topic relating to your course or intended future employment, as well as developing advanced skills in managing an extended project. The Professional Project provides experience of critically evaluating and reflecting upon the particular methodologies of your subject area. The project may include practical elements, dependent upon the subject discipline being studied. For students continuing from level 5 within the Institute of Sport, a project proposal will have been completed during a Level 5 module. The module is year-long and it will be your focus while you participate in the taught content during Block 1 which will lead to your submission of an ethics application (proposal). By the end of Block 4 you will submit both a written submission (project) and for participation at the school of sport student conference, either a either a mind map or pictorial representation of your project, which you will decide upon in discussion with your project supervisor. The presentation will be delivered to a small group of your peers and your supervisor/ second marker at the Department of Sport Student Conference (in the style of a viva voce). This should be considered a professional celebration of your studies moving into your employment. We therefore advise that you choose a topic that fuels your passions and interests, and that is relevant to your desired career path(s). You will work in partnership with your supervisors, and with their facilitation work towards a memorable end to your undergraduate studies.
