FD (Arts) Games Design

This module focuses on developing the technical and gameplay elements of a personal game project using a game engine. Building on prior learning in engine workflows and interaction development, you will plan, implement, and refine gameplay systems that create a clear and functional player experience. You will design and develop gameplay mechanics, interaction systems, player controls, and structured in-game events. Emphasis is placed on producing a coherent and playable build through structured development, testing, and technical problem-solving. You will refine systems to improve clarity, responsiveness, and overall player engagement. Throughout the module you will work with increasing independence, supported by feedback sessions. You will develop confidence through research, testing, and refinement, documenting key technical decisions and problem-solving approaches to support your final submission. This module may be completed as a standalone technical production project or integrated with Game Production – Design to form part of a cohesive game outcome. Where integrated, assessment focuses on gameplay systems and functionality rather than visual polish.

This module gives you the opportunity to work collaboratively as part of a development team to generate, research, develop, and present a new game concept. Working in a group, you will define the scope of your idea based on your combined skills and the time available. You will explore how games are pitched and marketed, and how creative media can be used to communicate a concept clearly and professionally. As part of the project, your team will produce a teaser trailer or Kickstarter-style promotional video, supported by a marketing plan that identifies the purpose, target audience, and promotional approach. You will apply and build on skills from earlier modules, including 3D content creation and technical development, to produce assets and interactive content for your promotional media. The module also introduces key creative production skills such as video editing, cinematography, graphic design, and motion graphics. The focus of this module is collaboration and professional communication. You will plan and refine your concept through structured idea generation, group decision-making, problem-solving, and feedback. The module concludes with the submission of your promotional video and marketing plan, supported by a group presentation explaining your concept and approach.

This module develops your ability to work professionally in response to a client brief. You will work with either a real client or a simulated scenario, gathering requirements and clarifying objectives throughout the project. You will research relevant context, identify constraints, and plan your approach to ensure your work aligns with agreed expectations. You will develop and produce outcomes that respond to the brief, which may include visual, technical, or design-based deliverables. The module emphasises professional working practices, including clear communication, managing feedback, and adapting your work in response to changing requirements. You will be expected to demonstrate organisation, independence, and problem-solving as you progress from initial concepts through to final delivery. You will provide evidence that supports your final submission, showing how you interpreted the brief and responded to feedback. The module concludes with the final outcome presented to the client or assessor, clearly demonstrating how your work meets the requirements of the brief. This module also provides a strong foundation for progression into industry‑focused pathways by strengthening your ability to deliver professional work within a structured and realistic project environment.
