Our MSc Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology gives you the technical depth and professional skills to work at that frontier, whatever direction you want your career to take.

This course is built around three things employers consistently ask for: hands-on laboratory competence, the ability to apply science to real industrial and medical problems, and the professional skills – communication, project management, funding and enterprise – that turn a good scientist into a job-ready one.

What happens on the course?

The course is structured to build your core knowledge and technical skills first, before you put them into practice in an extended, independent research project.

Semester one: building your technical foundation

You'll start by developing the practical and computational skills you'll rely on throughout the course – from core wet-lab techniques and good laboratory practice to bioinformatics and data-processing tools used across the biotechnology industry. Alongside this, you'll begin building a reflective professional portfolio, developing skills in project planning, scientific communication and funding acquisition that you'll carry through to graduation.

Semester two: applying the science

With your technical foundation in place, you'll move into the applied science itself – exploring how microbial and enzymatic processes are scaled up for sustainable industry, agriculture and the circular economy, and how molecular and cellular biotechnology is translated into diagnostics, therapeutics and regenerative medicine, including gene and RNA editing, synthetic biology and precision medicine.

Your research project

The course culminates in an extended, independent research project carried out under academic supervision, often connected to live departmental research. You'll write this up as a primary research paper and present your findings orally to staff and peers – exactly the format expected in industry and academic research roles.

How you'll learn and be assessed

Teaching blends face-to-face lectures, practical laboratory classes, workshops and student-led seminars, supported by guest lectures from industry professionals and, where possible, site visits to real workplace settings. Assessment is deliberately varied so you build a rounded set of professional skills:

  • a written research proposal and a business pitch presentation
  • case studies, critical reviews and data interpretation exercises
  • oral and poster presentations to staff and peers
  • a reflective professional portfolio built up across the course
  • your final research project report

You'll also work with AI tools as part of assignment briefs, so you graduate confident in using them ethically and effectively – a skillset increasingly expected in bioscience employers.

Postgraduate Loan (Home Fee Status):

There is no time limit on how long ago you completed your degree as long as this is your first Masters level qualification.

Your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.


Financial Hardship:

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
