What happens on the course?

This MSc is built for graduates who want to move beyond undergraduate biomedical science into advanced, clinically focused study. You'll deepen your understanding of the molecular basis of disease and sharpen the analytical, laboratory and research skills that employers across the NHS, pharmaceutical industry and academia are looking for.

Teaching blends on-campus lectures, laboratory practicals and tutor-led seminars with online resources on Canvas, so you can revisit material whenever you need to. Two strands sit at the heart of the course:

  • Problem-based learning – in Principles of Integrated Biomedical Science, small groups work through real clinical cases, connecting laboratory findings to diagnosis and treatment.
  • An independent research project – worth 60 credits, where you design, run and report an original piece of research in our laboratories or, where appropriate, an NHS pathology setting, supported by an academic supervisor.

Alongside these two strands, you'll build the core technical and professional skills that sit underneath everything else on the course:

  • Master essential wet-lab and dry-lab techniques used in biotechnology and molecular biology
  • Learn to interrogate scientific literature, apply statistics and communicate findings clearly
  • Choose an optional specialist strand — blood sciences, genomics and cellular pathology, or infection and immunity — to sharpen expertise in the area that matches your career goals
  • Develop digital fluency, including the responsible use of AI and safe, ethical handling of data

Whichever optional route you choose, you'll graduate with a research-informed, clinically grounded understanding of biomedical science, and the confidence to apply it in a laboratory, research or healthcare setting.

There is no time limit on how long ago you completed your degree as long as this is your first Masters level qualification.

Your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.


Financial Hardship:

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
