MSc Occupational Therapy

This module deepens your understanding of human development by integrating core scientific knowledge with occupational therapy theory and practice. You will critically and practically develop knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, enabling you to understand how the body functions across the lifespan and how illness, injury, or impairment can influence occupational performance and participation. Alongside this, you will apply psychological, social, and environmental lifespan theories to analyse how people grow, change, and adapt throughout their lives. You will explore how these factors interact with health, wellbeing, and occupational engagement, and learn why this is essential in the context of occupational therapy practice. You will learn why the biopsychical model is essential in the context of occupational therapy practice. Throughout the module, you will also cultivate your professional identity by demonstrating a commitment to understanding and addressing occupational dysfunction across the lifespan. You will examine how disruptions to occupation affect development, autonomy, and quality of life, and consider the therapist’s role in promoting participation, resilience, and meaningful engagement. Through lectures, case studies, and practical learning, you will develop the knowledge, skills, and professional behaviours required to understand, and therefore, support individuals experiencing occupational challenges at any stage of life.

This interprofessional module brings together MSc Physiotherapy and MSc Occupational Therapy students to build the essential foundations for professional practice. Throughout the module, you will develop a strong understanding of research principles, gaining the confidence to interpret evidence, critique academic literature and explore how research informs decision-making in contemporary health and social care. Working collaboratively with peers from both professions, you will enhance your communication skills across a range of clinical, academic and professional contexts. Through interactive learning, case discussions and simulated scenarios, you will explore how effective communication supports person-centred care, promotes shared decision-making and strengthens interprofessional teamwork, as well as building professional and therapeutic relationships. A core element of the module focuses on professionalism. You will examine the standards, codes of conduct and ethical frameworks that guide Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists, considering how these shape behaviour, accountability and high-quality practice. You will also reflect on professional identity, values and the responsibilities that come with professional practise. By the end of the module, you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to engage in evidence-informed practice, communicate effectively within diverse teams, and uphold the ethical and professional expectations required for safe, competent and compassionate care.
