The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering course is intended as your first step towards becoming a Chartered Civil Engineer and a practitioner in the global community. Civil Engineers are responsible for the design, management and construction of major infrastructure projects such as transport projects, bridges, major buildings, water supply, sewage, harbours and sea defences.

Graduates from the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering programme are characterised by their ability to develop appropriate solutions to engineering challenges by using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change. Chartered Engineers are variously engaged in technical and commercial leadership and possess effective interpersonal skills as well as digital literacy.

What happens on the course?

The application of mathematics and analytical skills is key to student development on this course, where the underlying principles of civil engineering serve as the bedrock for the curriculum at higher levels of study.

The course prepares students to fulfil industry expectations of being able to identify, define, and solve complex problems, while demonstrating awareness of the ethical, environmental, and business aspects of civil engineering projects. This includes the construction of dams, reservoirs, transport infrastructure, bridges, major buildings, water supply, sewage, harbours, and sea defences, all of which fall under the remit of civil engineering professionals. Assessment of your development and aptitude includes an individual research project, where you will review current literature and collect data before providing conclusive critical analysis.

Education on this course is varied and extensive and trains our future chartered civil engineers to be prepared for careers that will require them to demonstrate both technical and commercial leadership alongside a wealth of interpersonal skills and digital literacy.

The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering provides the requisite knowledge to become a professional member of the Civil Engineering community.   Lecturers on this course are a blend of respected academics and experienced professionals. Students are exposed to a sound theoretical base coupled with numerous practical exercises.

The School of Architecture and Built Environment operates from Springfield Campus, the University of Wolverhampton’s massively renovated Grade II-listed site which hosts a vast collection of cutting-edge facilities. These include specialised laboratories, design studios, lecture theatres and collaborative student spaces which provide industry-standard software programs, virtual reality equipment, and data capture technology.

The School’s respected staff are well-practiced in both academia and industry. Throughout your course, our teams will lend their experience and knowledge to enable you to develop your theoretical and practical civil engineering expertise.

A BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering graduate will be able to :

  • Optimise the application of existing and emerging technologies in Civil Engineering
  • analyse and develop solutions for civil engineering problems using appropriate theoretical and practical methods
  • demonstrate leadership, knowledge and skills within technical and commercial aspects of the civil engineering sector
  • develop effective interpersonal skills.

You will also adopt professional standards, recognising obligations to safety, the profession, and the environment. In addition, you will incorporate the mathematical and analytical skills necessary for understanding high level engineering science with practical applications.

  • GCSE English and Maths at grade C+/4 or an accepted equivalence.

Only the following equivalent qualifications are accepted for English: Functional Skills Level 2 English and OCN Access to HE Core English (12 credits at Level 2 or 3 in English)

Only the following equivalent qualifications are accepted for Mathematics: Functional Skills Level 2 Maths and OCN Access to HE Core Mathematics (12 credits at Level 2 or 3 in Mathematics)

PLUS EITHER

  • 96 UCAS points 
  • A Levels - grades CCC / BCD including Mathematics.
  • BTEC L3 Extended Diploma or OCR Cambridge L3 Technical Extended Diploma - grades MMM in a subject relevant to Civil Engineering or Construction/Built Environment Engineering and must include mathematics modules.
  • Access to HE Diploma (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3 (96 UCAS point equivalence, with at least 24 at Merit from Engineering/Mathematics; 12 credits at Merit from Electrical Science and 9 credits at Merit from Mechanical Science) 
  • T Level (Full T level achieved) achieving minimum P (A*-C) in one of the following subject areas; Design & Development for Engineering & Manufacturing; Maintenance, Installation & Repair for Engineering & Manufacturing or Engineering, Manufacturing, Processing and Control.
