What happens on the course?

Civil engineering is a three-year journey from fundamentals to independent practice, and the course is structured to build your confidence and capability at every stage.

In Year 1, you'll lay the groundwork: mathematics, mechanics, materials and surveying, alongside an extended induction that helps you settle into university life and start thinking like an engineer. Rather than sitting through lectures and hoping it clicks later, you'll be applying core principles in labs and workshops from week one.

Year 2 sharpens your technical focus. You'll move into geotechnical engineering, structural analysis and transport systems planning, while a dedicated Professional Development module builds the workplace skills — and the guaranteed placement experience — that set you apart from graduates who've only ever studied theory.

By Year 3, you're working the way a practising engineer works. Your Capstone Design Project puts you in a team tackling a realistic, industry-informed brief, weighing up technical, environmental, economic and safety considerations exactly as you would on a live project. Alongside it, your Final Year Dissertation lets you investigate a specialist topic you're genuinely interested in — from sustainable infrastructure to flood risk to emerging construction technology.

Across all three years, you'll:

Placements on the course

Every student on this course is guaranteed professional placement — it's built into the degree, not an optional extra you have to chase down yourself.

Your placement sits within the Professional Development-Civil Engineering module in the second year of your course, worth 30 credits — a full quarter of your Year 2 award. It's a structured, condensed placement experience of around 36 hours, and it can take the form of:

  • An in-person placement with an employer
  • A remote or hybrid placement
  • A live, employer-designed project or brief

Whatever format it takes, it's always linked directly to your coursework and assessment, so what you learn on placement feeds straight back into your degree. It gives you genuine engineering workplace experience, a chance to build your professional network, and material to talk about confidently at interview — all before you graduate.
Our Careers, Employability and Success team sources and supports placement opportunities throughout your course. Students on our civil engineering courses have connected with employers including William Gough, Dunton Environmental, Network Rail, National Grid, Gleeds, Wates and United Living through our 'Meet The Employer' events and placement network — with graduates going on to roles such as Project Manager on live regional construction projects.

  • BTEC L3 Extended Diploma or OCR Cambridge L3 Technical Extended Diploma - grades MMM in a subject relevant to Civil Engineering or Construction/Built Environment Engineering and must include mathematics modules.
  • Access to HE Diploma (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3 (96 UCAS point equivalence, with at least 24 at Merit from Engineering/Mathematics; 12 credits at Merit from Electrical Science and 9 credits at Merit from Mechanical Science)
  • T Level (Full T level achieved) achieving minimum P (A*-C) in one of the following subject areas; Design & Development for Engineering & Manufacturing; Maintenance, Installation & Repair for Engineering & Manufacturing or Engineering, Manufacturing, Processing and Control.
