What happens on the course?

Your Pharmacology degree follows a spiral curriculum: each year builds on the last, revisiting core concepts and adding new depth, so your knowledge compounds rather than resets. Across three years, you'll move from foundational science to independent research, always with a practical, laboratory-based focus.


Year 1 — Building your scientific foundation

You'll cover the essential chemistry, biology, microbiology and human physiology that underpin pharmacology, alongside two dedicated pharmacology modules. Alongside the science, you'll develop the independent thinking and study skills you'll rely on for the rest of your degree.

Year 2 — Understanding drug discovery and action

You'll dig into how drugs are discovered, developed and tested — including biochemistry, genetics and the pharmacodynamic principles of medicines. This is also where you'll pick up laboratory-based skills that are essential to drug discovery and testing.

Year 3 — Independent research and advanced practice

Around a third of your final year is dedicated to your own research project in an area of pharmacology that interests you. In the remaining time, you'll study advanced topics such as pharmaceutical biotechnology, molecular biology, gene manipulation and biochemical pharmacology, spending time in research laboratories to build current, employer-relevant techniques.

Teaching blends several approaches designed to build both scientific knowledge and professional confidence:

  • Flipped classroom & problem-based learning: online preparation feeds directly into in-person sessions, so class time is spent applying knowledge, not just receiving it

This established course gives you a genuine grounding in both traditional and state-of-the-art drug design and development, combining theoretical teaching with laboratory practicals and independent research.
