Estates Masterplan

It is a very exciting time for our university as we build on nearly 200 years of existence and embark on the next phase of the University’s development captured in our new Strategy 2035.

To achieve our ambitions, we have been developing a new Estates Masterplan to create much more connected, vibrant and dynamic campuses which prioritise the student experience and which will support you to achieve the best outcomes.  The plan will also allow us to achieve our environmental sustainability targets, release resources to invest in the student experience and support the University’s long term financial sustainability.

There are several projects in the Estates Masterplan to develop our campus and facilities over the next few years, including;

• the development of a medical school and accompanying facilities. 
• The relocation of teaching activities from Telford Campus to Wolverhampton and Walsall Campus by August 2026.  
• The relocation of Professional Service teams and activities to the second floor of the Civic Centre.
• There is a planned closure of the George Wallis Building (MK) and relocation of Creative Industries courses to new, modern and inspiring teaching and learning spaces within the Housman building (MX) in 2027.

As part of our long-term strategy, reducing the cost of our estate, re-investing in better student facilities, enhancement of our education offer, and creating a more connected university experience.  

We have taken the decision to notify everyone as early as possible of the Estates Masterplan vision. This does mean that some details are still in process, but we aim to share regular updates and timelines as soon as they are confirmed.

Confirmed timelines:

• Professional Services staff who are relocating to the Civic Centre will relocate by October 2025
• Relocation of teaching, research and support activities from Telford Campus to our Wolverhampton and Walsall Campuses by August 2026

• Establish the Black Country Medical School facilities in the Wolverhampton City Campus Sport Centre completed earliest September 2026
• Establish a new integrated facility for the School of Creative Industries in the Housman Building (MX) in 2027

The University is committed to the continuous improvement of all our campuses. A specific masterplan is currently being commissioned for the Walsall Campus as part of the second phase of our planning, focusing on its future needs and enhancements. We look forward to sharing the details with you once it is finalised.

Within the current Estates Masterplan the Chaplaincy building (MP) at Wolverhampton City Campus will continue to be a hub of support for the spiritual, cultural and pastoral needs of students and staff. We are committed to ensuring prayer and quiet contemplation spaces are available across all our sites.

We understand the importance of sports and leisure provision at the Wolverhampton City Campus. We are currently exploring a range of options. We will communicate further information as soon as plans are finalised.

If you have applied to an undergraduate course delivered at Telford Campus, your campus of study will change to our Wolverhampton Campuses from September 2026.

Postgraduate engineering will be relocated to Wolverhampton Springfield Campus. For postgraduate programmes in Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy these courses will be relocated to the Walsall Campus from August 2026.

If you have applied to an undergraduate course delivered at Telford Campus, your campus of study will change to our Wolverhampton Campuses from September 2026.

Postgraduate engineering will be relocated to Wolverhampton Springfield Campus. For postgraduate programmes in Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy these courses will be relocated to the Walsall Campus from August 2026.

Teaching at Telford will continue to be delivered for all current students and anyone starting at level 4 or level 7 in April and September 2025 until August 2026.  Beyond August 2026, the continuation of courses will be delivered at Wolverhampton or Walsall Campus.

For Engineering and Nursing Foundation students starting in September 2025 you will start your programme and remain at the Wolverhampton campuses. -

Mental Health Nursing placements will still be offered in the Midlands Partnership Trust and the Private Voluntary Independent settings in the Telford and Shrewsbury region. Adult Nursing placements will continue to be offered in the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. Placement location will remain the same throughout your course.

There are limited free carparks for staff and students at Wolverhampton City, Springfield and Walsall Campuses. 

We offer University-managed accommodation at both Wolverhampton City and Walsall campuses. While places within university-managed halls are limited, we are actively engaged in planning and exploring further accommodation solutions to support our expanding student population. We are also working to strengthen partnerships with private accommodation providers to ensure a diverse range of options are available to students near the Wolverhampton City Campus.

All teaching will end by August 2026 and relocate to one of our other campuses.

If you start a course in April, May or September 2025 at Telford then your course will be delivered at Telford up to August 2026, at which point your campus will change from September 2026.

Teaching at Telford will continue to be delivered for all current students and all those starting in April and September 2025 until August 2026, with the exception of level 3 foundation year students. Current foundation students will be given the choice to study Year 1 at either Telford or Wolverhampton City Campus. Subsequent years of study on your course will take place at one of our other campuses from September 2026.

All teaching, research and support activities relocate to Wolverhampton or Walsall campuses by August 2026.

If you have applied to a course at Telford Campus on an undergraduate course or a part-time postgraduate programme your campus of study will change to our Wolverhampton or Walsall Campus from September 2026.

There will be a relocation of teaching of some courses to different buildings on the same campus. The planned closure of the George Wallis Building (MK) means that Creative Industries courses will be relocated to new, modern and inspiring teaching and learning spaces within the Housman Building (MX) in 2027. The new spaces will provide an enhanced learning environment and foster an enriched student experience.  The Sports Centre at Wolverhampton City Campus will be repurposed to create a medical school and accompanying facilities to support our developing education provision. Extensive sports facilities remain open to all at Walsall Campus. 

The changes may be a little disruptive, but we will try to limit this so as not to affect the delivery of your programme.

The creation of a new, inspiring, vibrant and fit for purpose School of Creative Industries facility in the Housman (MX) building will be completed in 2027. Our investment in this facility and enhanced course portfolio will deliver a sector-leading learning environment and foster an enriched student experience. 

The decision to close the George Wallis Building (MK) was not made lightly and follows a thorough review of the building's sustainability and the University's long-term needs. The building requires significant investment of an estimated £54m to upgrade to appropriate standards.

The vision for the estate masterplan captures the development of a City Centre student village and plaza. The option of demolishing the George Wallis Building (MK) will form part of the longer-term consideration in the next phase of the masterplan. Final details of all plans are still being determined.

All relevant equipment used for teaching and research will be relocated to the alternative site for that area, which will be undertaken in consultation with the relevant academic and technical teams.
