Computer Science graduate makes use of AI to develop a new chat bot
A University of Wolverhampton Computer Science student took an intelligent approach to his studies when he developed an Artificial Intelligence chat bot to help potential applicants with course enquiries.
Julius Odede, 35, from Lagos, Nigeria, recently graduated with a First Class degree in Data Science from the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at the University.
With a background in Engineering and an Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, Julius decided that, with a society driven by Data Science and Artificial Intelligence he wanted to extend his knowledge and decided to study for a Master’s degree in the field – with a view to changing the direction of his career.
He had engaged with the University’s live chat function on the website and was keen to see how it could be improved and refined in terms of response times and feedback. He developed JayBot – a chat bot which helps applicants with enquiries - and runs on an AI model, a large language model, which scrapes data from the University website.
His intelligent approach to using data in an efficient way has improved the effectiveness of responses for potential applicants using the chat facility on the University’s website.
He said: “With the rise in Artificial Intelligence (AI) over the past few years I think there will be lots of potential for career opportunities. AI will change the way we interact with computers and machines if it can be regulated. But if it is used for the benefit of mankind, used to solve problems, it can help to make tasks easier so we don’t have to do the same thing over and over.
“I’m really interested in pursuing a career that might change things for the better in the world, or to teach young people. I’m elated to be graduating. My experience of learning at the University has been fantastic, I’ve met incredible people, my colleagues, my lecturers and there are a lot of learning resources available.
“It’s been a good journey so far and I’m so proud to have graduated. I’m from Nigeria and I have family members who have graduated in Nursing from the University, and in my country we use the UK education system as a benchmark – I wanted to come to the source to learn from the source.
“I would say it’s never too late, you’re never too young and you’re never too old. If I can do it, you can do it. You have to keep learning and one thing I’ve learned at the University is that you have to keep learning for life.”
After the creation of JayBot, Julius has successfully created a Chatbot and an AI system for two organisations in Africa and the UK.
