I started university as a mature student and mother. I wanted to be a good role model and provide a better life for my children. Born in the West Midlands, Wolverhampton was my first choice. My first meeting was with Dr Ruth Shiner. She understood how important it was for me to obtain a degree. All the facilities and laboratories across the campuses provided adequate resources during my study. I particularly enjoyed the student facilities where support and extra help was offered by the lecturers. I met some amazing friends, that after 20 years, we all still keep in touch. My favourite memory was graduation day, when I realised what I had achieved after all the hard work, and help and support from the lecturers.
My degree helped me gain knowledge, skills, build confidence and break down barriers to opportunity. I continued to obtain my Master of Science (MSc), a Post Graduate Diploma (PG Dip), and a Certificate in Education (Cert Ed). It prepared me for work in society and opened the door to a better life.
My responsibilities are to help people in education and development by delivering presentations and communicating effectively. These are to groups of people, families or on a one to one basis. The presentations are normally oral, power-point, informative, instructive, or motivational presentations. I also organise and set up meetings with senior management.
There were two highlights of my career. The first was when my research paper from the MSc degree was published, which helped set up breakfast clubs in schools. The second was traveling the world and ending up living in Cyprus.
I have found that good education can open the doors to many opportunities in life, at any age. My advice is to be focused and committed as the workload and pressure, at times can be overwhelming. To be determined and never give up, as the long term achievement will benefit your career.
