The Foundation Year of the BA (Hons) Business and Tourism Management programme provides an inclusive and supportive pathway into higher education for students who may not meet the standard entry requirements for Level 4 or who would benefit from additional academic preparation. It is designed to build students’ confidence, academic capability and understanding of business and tourism, while introducing key concepts in leadership, digital citizenship and organisational practice.
The Foundation Year integrates academic skills development with introductory subject knowledge, ensuring that students develop a strong foundation for undergraduate study. Through modules such as Preparing for Success at University, Principles of Business, Digital Citizenship and Introduction to Leadership and Management, students develop essential skills in critical thinking, communication, digital literacy and professional awareness. These modules are structured to support a gradual transition from general academic skills to an applied understanding of business and tourism environments.
A distinctive feature of the Foundation Year is its emphasis on real-world business and tourism contexts and global perspectives. Students explore how organisations operate across local and international markets, how leadership and management influence organisational performance, and how digital technologies shape business models and tourism experiences. Reflective and applied learning activities encourage students to connect theory with their own experiences and aspirations.
The Foundation Year reflects the University’s Curriculum Framework by integrating the development of knowledge, skills and professional identity. By the end of the year, students will have developed the academic confidence, digital competence and subject understanding required to progress successfully into Level 4, ensuring that they are well prepared for the academic and professional demands of the Business and Tourism Management programme.
