The Foundation Year of the BA (Hons) International Hospitality Management programme provides a supportive and inclusive pathway into higher education for students who may not meet the standard entry requirements for Level 4 or who would benefit from additional academic preparation. It is designed to build students’ confidence, academic capability and understanding of the hospitality industry, while introducing key concepts in business, leadership and digital citizenship within an international hospitality context.
The Foundation Year integrates academic skills development with introductory subject knowledge, ensuring that students develop a strong foundation for undergraduate study. Through modules such as Preparing for Success at University, Principles of Business, Digital Citizenship and Introduction to Leadership and Management, students gain essential skills in critical thinking, communication, digital literacy and professional awareness. These modules are structured to support a gradual transition from general academic skills to an applied understanding of hospitality and business environments.
A distinctive feature of the Foundation Year is its emphasis on real-world hospitality contexts and international perspectives. Students explore how hospitality organisations operate across global markets, how leadership and management influence service quality, and how digital technologies shape guest experiences and organisational performance. Reflective and applied learning activities encourage students to connect theory with their own experiences and aspirations within the hospitality sector.
The Foundation Year reflects the University’s Curriculum Framework by integrating the development of knowledge, skills and professional identity. By the end of the year, students will have developed the academic confidence, digital competence and industry awareness required to progress successfully into Level 4, ensuring that they are well prepared for the academic and professional demands of the International Hospitality Management programme.
