Choose the Sandwich Placement route if you want everything the standard BEng (Hons) Motorsport and Automotive Engineering degree offers — University of Wolverhampton Racing (UWR), industry-standard CAD, CFD and FEA, and a curriculum built around the Engineering Council's AHEP 4 standards — plus a dedicated, assessed year working inside the motorsport and automotive industry before you graduate.

This route exists for one reason: proof. A degree tells an employer what you know. A completed industry placement tells them what you've already done. Previous placements have been with organisations including Stellantis and Motorsport UK, giving you a documented year of professional experience most graduates simply don't have.

The course in five steps:

  1. Learn — build the foundations in solid mechanics, thermodynamics and engineering analysis alongside industry-standard CAD, CFD and FEA.
  2. Build — specialise in designing and manufacturing key components like chassis and powertrain, and go deeper into computational analysis.
  3. Work — spend Year 3 on a assessed industrial placement with a real motorsport or automotive employer, previous examples including Stellantis and Motorsport UK.
  4. Return — bring what you learned on placement back into your final year, applying real industry insight to your own vehicle design and Individual Innovation Project.
  5. Lead — graduate with a portfolio of vehicles and projects you built, plus a documented year of professional industry experience employers can actually verify.

What happens on the course?

Years 1, 2 and 4 cover the same engineering ground as the standard BEng —  Year 3 is where this route earns its name.

Years 1–2 — Foundations, then Specialisation

You'll build core engineering foundations in statics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and materials science, get hands-on with CAD, CFD and FEA from your first modules, then specialise into chassis and powertrain design, deeper computational analysis, and a substantial industry-partnered group innovation project.

Year 3 — Industrial Placement

  • Gain hands-on experience working with leading motorsport or automotive companies — previous examples include Stellantis and Motorsport UK
  • Develop your professional skills and build your industry network
  • Apply your academic knowledge to real workplace projects and challenges
  • Receive structured guidance and mentorship from industry professionals throughout

Year 4 — Application and Innovation

  • Specialise further and develop the key skills that enhance your employability
  • Work on new models and parts for UWR and our industrial partners
  • Deliver your Individual Innovation Project, now informed by direct workplace experience
  • Present your work at Innovations Unleashed, our annual showcase alongside industry leaders

  • BTEC L3 Extended Diploma or OCR Cambridge L3 Technical Extended Diploma – grade MMP in an Engineering subject to include Mathematics
  • BTEC L3 Diploma – grade DM in an Engineering subject to include Mathematics
  • Access to HE Diploma (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3 (80 UCAS point equivalence) in an Engineering subject to include Mathematics.
  • T-Levels - overall grade of Pass and a minimum grade of C in Core in an Engineering subject; Design Development Engineering, Maintenance, Installation and repair for Engineering or Engineering, Manufacturing, Processing and Control
