This isn't the standard degree with a placement bolted onto the end — the sandwich year is written into the course structure as a credit-bearing part of your degree, with its own learning outcomes and assessment weight.

What happens on the course?

This course follows the same academic backbone as the standard degree for three of its four years — the difference is the dedicated placement year sitting in the middle of it.

Year 1 — Building your scientific foundation

Identical to the standard route: you build the biology, chemistry and legal grounding every forensic scientist needs, in a forensic context from day one.

  • Learn core biological and chemical principles — cell biology, genetics, atomic structure and chemical reactions — alongside the analytical and laboratory skills that turn theory into usable evidence.
  • Get introduced to the legal and regulatory framework forensic scientists work within, including the role of the Forensic Science Regulator and ISO laboratory accreditation.
  • Build academic and digital skills, including scientific literature searching and the responsible use of AI in academic work, through a dedicated induction module.

Year 2 — Specialising in major evidence types

Again identical to the standard route — but this time, everything you learn here is what you'll be applying in the workplace the following year.

  • Work with DNA profiling, fingerprint and biometric evidence, and forensic odontology.
  • Study drugs, toxicology and noxious substances, including chromatographic analysis techniques (GC-FID/MS and LC/MS).
  • Manage complex and major crime scenes to the standards of ISO 17020.

Year 3 — Your sandwich placement

This is where this course diverges from every other forensic science route at Wolverhampton. You spend the entire year on placement, in a professional environment relevant to your degree, developing the technical and independent-working skills that only sustained real-world exposure can build. This isn't a pause in your studies — it's a core, assessed 60-credit module that counts toward your final degree.

Year 4 — Returning to finish as a sharper scientist

You rejoin the standard course structure for your final year, now with a full year of professional experience behind you.

  • Examine physical evidence types — toolmarks, footwear impressions, ballistics, glass, fibres and soils.
  • Study forensic anthropology, identifying and analysing skeletal remains for medico-legal and humanitarian investigations.
  • Prepare and defend an evidential statement as an expert witness in a mock court exercise.
  • Complete your Honours Project — many students find their placement year sharpens exactly what they want to investigate.

Forensic Biology introduces you to fundamental biological principles and laboratory techniques necessary for the study of Forensic Science. You will explore; the function of structures within prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, the flow of genetic information from DNA through to proteins via transcription and translation, classical genetics, DNA replication, cell division and the cell cycle along with the study of key molecules in the context of biological processes. You will study biological evidence types commonly encountered in cases, like body fluids and hair and learn to analyse as well as identify biological materials using methodology such as microscopy, presumptive and confirmatory tests. The analysis of DNA using molecular biology techniques such as polymerase chain reaction, electrophoresis and DNA sequencing will be considered along with their application to forensic science. You will explore how biological evidence is deposited, recovered, and preserved, and how it can be analysed to support investigative and legal processes. The module combines theory with practical laboratory sessions, giving you hands-on experience in a range of fundamental techniques such as microscopy, sample handling, and basic presumptive and confirmatory tests. You will learn to prepare and examine samples, record observations accurately, and interpret results in a scientifically robust way. Alongside the practical work, lectures and workshops will introduce you to the scientific foundations for biological evidence types, professional standards, including safe laboratory practice, ethical considerations, and quality control procedures in line with forensic guidelines. This module provides an in-depth exploration of the theoretical and practical aspects of crime scene investigation and complex incidents requiring forensic investigation, with a focus on serious and major crimes. Students will gain an understanding of the critical principles and processes involved in scene management, preservation, forensic strategy, examination and evidence processing, ensuring they are equipped with the skills necessary to handle complex crime scenes while adhering to both legal and professional standards. The module will explore different serious, major and complex crime types, as well as other complex incidents requiring forensic investigation, and application of scene processes and principles to different scene type scenarios, working as part of a wider investigation and specialist team. The module will examine the role of forensic science professionals in scene investigations, considering essential regulations such as the Forensic Science Regulator (FSR) Codes of Conduct, and the importance of accreditation to standards like ISO 17020 (which governs the competence of inspection bodies and crime scene investigation). Students will also explore the legal and ethical obligations of crime scene investigators, including the protocols necessary to maintain the integrity of evidence and ensure it is admissible in court.

This module builds on your technical knowledge of bulk drug chemistry towards critically analysing and interpreting complex biofluid evidence related to drugs, alcohol, corrosives and poisons. The content spans the UK legal framework and Coroner’s court perspectives on drugs, alcohol and noxious substances. Practicals will develop your technical skills in advanced analytical instrumentation, preventing sample contamination throughout the chain of custody. Data will be processed and interpreted from a range of chromatographic systems (GC-FID/MS & LC/MS). The quality assurance framework will enhance your understanding of the strengths and limitations of such toxicology data in real forensic investigations. You will study pharmacokinetics and bodily fluids commonly encountered in cases of poisoning, overdose, accidental exposures and postmortem. The case study approach combines theory with practical laboratory and IT data sessions. You will apply advanced techniques to examine and interpret toxicological evidence, learning how to collect, prepare samples, analyse, process and interpret complex data with scientific rigour. Practical activities include generating and interpreting drug profiles from high throughput analysis, examining multiple biological evidence types, and presenting your findings clearly and professionally in scientific reports for court purposes. The UK Forensic Science Regulator (FSR) references “Drugs, Toxicology and Noxious Materials” as a recognised operational grouping, showing that these materials are handled within the regulated forensic science system. This module content aligns with the guidelines on toxicology FSAs spanning drugs, alcohol and noxious substances currently being established by the Forensic Regulators Act 2021 and associated Code of Practice controls, as developed by the UK and Ireland Association of Forensic Toxicologists.

This module builds on your foundational knowledge in Forensic Biology to explore the analysis and interpretation of complex biological evidence. The focus here is on the main approaches in Human Identification, which are utilized in general Forensic Science as well as Mass Fatality Incident Identification. One focus of the module is on advanced DNA concepts, including the prevention of contamination, interpretation of DNA profiles, statistical evaluation, and understanding evidential value of DNA evidence in real forensic investigations. Prints left by friction ridge skin, such as fingerprints, their analysis, comparison to references will be the second area of study, developing an understanding of their information content and evidentiary value. You will explore forensic odontology, how it is applied to human identification, and the methodology involved. You will also learn concepts of Biometrics and the inter-connection between lab-based analysis results, database searches and how their outcomes are arrived at. The module combines theory with practical laboratory sessions. You will apply advanced techniques to examine and interpret biological evidence, learning how to collect, analyse, and interpret complex samples with scientific rigour, while preserving their integrity and understanding the strengths and limitations of evidence in real forensic investigations. Practical activities include generating and interpreting DNA profiles, examining multiple biological evidence types, demonstrating an appreciation for standards and best practice involved, and presenting your findings clearly and professionally.

It is designed to support learners in developing the knowledge, skills, and reflective practices essential for continuous professional growth in a dynamic and evolving workplace. Through a mix of practical experience and professional development sessions, this module will enable learners to explore essential themes such as personal effectiveness, leadership, communication, ethical practice, and lifelong learning. Drawing directly from work experience and/or professional setting, learners will reflect on their real-world experiences to deepen their understanding of what it means to grow and succeed in their chosen field. Students may draw on case studies or sector examples to connect theory to practice. This module explores the critical role of the forensic expert witness within the criminal justice system. Students will examine the responsibilities, ethical considerations, and legal frameworks governing expert testimony. Emphasis will be placed on the communication of complex scientific evidence in a clear, impartial, and legally compliant manner. In this module, you will explore a range of forensic specialisms through practical classes and case studies based on the expertise and/or case experience of your lecturers. Each session allows you to investigate real-world forensic scenarios, applying scientific techniques to analyse evidence. You will then compile your findings into an evidential statement, learning how to structure, interpret, and present scientific data in a professional and legally-relevant context. This module provides students with an in-depth understanding of the role of forensic anthropology in medico-legal and humanitarian contexts. Focusing on the identification and analysis of skeletal remains, the module equips students with the practical skills necessary to determine whether a material is bone, and if so, whether it is human or non-human. Through a combination of hands-on laboratory sessions, lectures, and case-based discussions, students will learn to recognise and classify skeletal elements, assess their significance, and contribute to building a biological profile. Students will explore the diverse environments in which forensic anthropologists operate, including crime scenes, mass fatality incidents, and archaeological recoveries. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the protocols for forensic recovery, ethical considerations, and the interdisciplinary collaboration essential to the field. By the end of the module, students will be able to critically assess bone identification scenarios, demonstrate competence in distinguishing human from animal bone, and contextualise their findings within forensic investigations. The honours project module will give you the opportunity to undertake an extended, problem-focused, original investigation related to your overall programme of study and is a requirement for the award of an Honours degree. The project will provide you with a choice based on your interests, modules studied previously, staff expertise and physical resources within the School. You will undertake either a laboratory-based, systematic review, science communications, educational or bioinformatics-type project. The project will develop your ability to plan and execute research, analyse quantitative and/or qualitative data, and critically evaluate findings. You’ll learn to present results clearly and coherently, using appropriate scientific formats and conventions. It will provide a valuable opportunity to showcase your problem-solving, scientific writing, and data-handling skills, preparing you for future employment or postgraduate study.

This module introduces students to the scientific examination and interpretation of marks, traces, and physical evidence commonly encountered in forensic investigations. Building on core forensic science principles, the module covers the recovery, analysis, and evaluation of a wide range of evidence types which could include toolmarks, footwear impressions, ballistics, gunshot residue, glass, fibres, plant material, and soils. Students will explore the scientific and evidential value of a variety of evidence types, considering factors such as transfer, persistence, and reliability in the context of criminal investigations. The module combines theoretical lectures with hands-on practical sessions, enabling students to apply forensic techniques in a controlled laboratory setting. Practical work includes the recovery, examination, and comparison of marks and physical evidence, as well as exercises in documenting and interpreting findings. Students will also learn to evaluate evidential significance, critically assess limitations, and understand the role of evidence in supporting investigative and legal processes. Emphasis is placed on topics like contamination prevention, quality control, and clear record-keeping. By the end of the module, students will have developed practical analytical skills, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate forensic findings confidently, preparing them for further study in forensic science and careers in laboratory-based forensic roles.

Forensic Science graduates have excellent job prospects. According to unistats.com, 85% of our graduates are in employment within 6 months of leaving, placing us in the top 10 universities for employability.

Employment opportunities exist for you with the Forensic Science Sector both with independent providers of forensic analysis and police scientific work, insurance companies, legal firms and independent forensic laboratories.

Examples of possible future careers include scene of crime work, quality assurance in food and pharmaceutical manufacturing, trading standards, public and industrial health and safety, and accident investigation.

You could also train to become a science teacher or continue your studies as a postgraduate either on a Masters course or PhD.

Some of our graduates are working for various Forensic science providers. Others are working for the West Midlands Police, West Mercia Police, Staffordshire Police and the Leicestershire Constabulary as crime scene investigators, fingerprint and footwear analysts, criminal intelligence analysts and police officers.

Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences

The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences provides an accreditation system for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in forensic science and related topics. Accreditation is given provided the course content meets with the Society's component standards which provide a quality endorsement of the course.

Tuition Fees Loan (Home Fee Status):

Most students will be able to apply for a loans to pay for these subject to eligibility. To find out more information please refer to the government Student Finance website.

Changes for EU students:

The UK government has confirmed that EU students starting courses from 1 August 2021 will normally be classified as having Overseas Fee status. More information about the change is available at UKCISA:

EU citizens living in the UK with 'settled' status, and Irish nationals living in the UK or Ireland, will still be classified as Home students, providing they meet the usual residency requirements, for more information about EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS)


Self-funding:

If you don’t want to take out a loan to pay your fees or if you aren’t eligible to receive a loan, you might want to take advantage of the University’s scheme to pay by instalments: See How to pay.

Your employer, embassy or organisation can pay for your Tuition fees:

If your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.


Financial Hardship:

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund.

for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
