What happens on the course?

This course is currently subject to revalidation in February 2027.

The course is built around 180 credits: six 20-credit modules and a 60-credit dissertation, spread across two semesters and a final research phase. Rather than treating construction management as a single skill, it separates out the strands that make a project succeed — contracts, planning, strategy, and the people-management skills needed to lead a team — so you build a rounded toolkit before you specialise.

How the course is structured

  • Semester one grounds you in the fundamentals: how construction projects are procured and contracted, and how they're actually run once work is on site
  • Semester two moves up a level, developing your strategic and analytical thinking — programme-level management, advanced planning and control techniques, and the research skills you'll need for independent study
  • Contemporary Issues, delivered in semester two, takes you into whatever the sector is grappling with right now, set each year with employer partners
  • Your dissertation lets you go deep on a topic of your own choosing, with one-to-one supervision — and the option to link it to your own workplace if you're already in industry

How you'll learn and be assessed

Teaching blends traditional lectures and seminars with problem-based, industry-set project briefs, guest input from working practitioners, and content that reflects real project constraints rather than textbook scenarios. Most modules are assessed through a portfolio — reports, case studies, presentations and reflective statements — built up piece by piece, so you graduate with a body of work you can show employers, not just a transcript.

  • Hands-on experience with the planning software the industry actually uses, including Microsoft Project and Asta Powerproject
  • Regular contact with industry practitioners through guest lectures and site-facing project work

This requires expertise on the standard forms of contracts available, ability to synthesise principles from them and related documents for application to problems often encountered on projects. These fees relate to new entrants only for the academic year indicated for entry onto the course, any subsequent years of study may be subject to an annual increase, usually in line with inflation.

A second-class honours degree in a construction related discipline, or equivalent, is required for direct entry onto the Master’s programme. Students are selected using application form and references in the first instance. However, if you have a compatible non-cognate degree and/or have relevant industrial experience you may be interviewed and if successful offered a place on the Masters course or on the postgraduate certificate version of the course with the potential to extend this to a full Master’s degree. or A Postgraduate Certificate in a construction related discipline, or a related subject with a minimum of grade C in all modules.

Postgraduate Loan (Home Fee Status):

You may be able to get a postgraduate student loan from Student Finance England of up to £13,206 to help pay for a Master’s degree. Applications are made through Student Finance England and more information on the regulations and eligibility criteria can be found at Masters Loans gov.uk.

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
