At the end of March 2026, students from Group 123 at Walsall Campus came together to celebrate their final theory day on campus as part of their pre-registration nursing course. Organised by their Year Lead, Helen Campbell, the event marked a significant milestone in the students’ academic journey as they prepare to transition into professional practice.

The celebration was made particularly special with the presence of honoured guest Mel Roberts, Group Chief Nursing Officer and Director of Infection Prevention and Control at The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, and Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust. Mel joined the cohort to share her inspiring nursing journey, reflecting on her career progression and outlining the wide range of future career pathways available within the profession. Her insights provided valuable guidance and motivation to the students as they look ahead to the next stage of their careers.

The event offered a meaningful opportunity for students to reflect on their achievements, celebrate their progress, and look to the future with confidence.

Speaking about the day, Mel Roberts said: “It was a privilege to join the celebrations of the third-year final student nurses today to talk about my journey to becoming a Chief Nursing Officer and to discuss the future with them. They were professional and asked important questions about future roles and interview preparation, which I was delighted to support them with to help ensure they have the right opportunities as they qualify.”Three women standing together

Lorraine Diegnan, Principal Lecturer for Pre-Registration Nursing, added: “We were delighted that Mel could join us on campus and take time out of her busy schedule to speak with our final-year students. Her contribution was extremely valuable, particularly her sharing of professional nursing experiences, and she provided thoughtful and comprehensive responses to the questions raised by the cohort.”
