Your Rights Matter: Join our free Victims' Code workshop for Hate Crime Awareness Week
During Hate Crime Awareness Week in October, the University will host a series of events at City Campus.
Information stalls will be located in the Millennium City (MC) Building, near the canteen and Costa, offering advice on hate crime and how to report it. The stalls will be hosted by representatives from the Local Council's Community Cohesion Team, Remedi and local Community Officers.
There will also be a free interactive workshop on Wednesday 14 October, from 4.30pm to 6pm at City Campus. Delivered by Kaur Lab CIC and funded by the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, the session forms part of the Sada Haq – Our Rights (SHOR) project and introduces the Victims' Code and the 12 rights available to victims of crime.
Using real-life scenarios, discussion and practical activities, the workshop will bring the Victims' Code to life. The 90-minute session includes dedicated time for questions and answers.
A key aim of the project is to raise awareness of victims' rights. While many people understand that those arrested are informed of their rights, fewer are aware that victims also have rights, or what action they can take if those rights are not being upheld.
The session will explore:
- the 12 rights under the Victims’ Code;
- what victims should expect when reporting a crime and during the criminal justice process;
- access to support and information;
- additional considerations for victims who may face barriers to accessing justice;
- what someone can do if their Victims’ Code rights are not being met; and
- where to access further information and support.
No prior knowledge of the Victims' Code is required.
Although Kaur Lab UK CIC has a particular focus on violence against women and girls and the experiences of Sikh and South Asian women, the SHOR workshop is relevant to victims of all forms of crime. Everyone is welcome to attend this workshop.
