Global land regeneration leader receives Honorary Doctorate

The University of Wolverhampton awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Leadership to internationally recognised land regeneration and environmental leadership expert Neil Roe in recognition of his outstanding contribution to industry, education and the development of future talent.

Neil received the honour during the University's graduation ceremonies, celebrating a distinguished career spanning brownfield remediation, environmental sustainability, leadership and business development, alongside more than a decade of support for the University and its students.

Neil said:

"I am truly honoured to receive this Honorary Doctorate from the University of Wolverhampton. Looking back over my career, the achievements I am most proud of are not the projects we delivered, but the people we developed and the opportunities we created. Success is never a destination; it is a responsibility to leave industries, communities and future generations in a better position than we found them.

The University has been an outstanding partner in that mission, helping to bridge the gap between academia and industry while developing the leaders and innovators of tomorrow. I hope this recognition encourages others to embrace ambitious thinking, lead with integrity and never underestimate the difference one person can make. I accept this honour with immense gratitude and dedicate it to everyone who has been part of that journey."

As Chief Executive Officer of Dunton Environmental and an International Director and advisor with Vinci Construction, one of the world's largest construction companies, Neil built a reputation as a leading expert in land transformation and regeneration. Throughout his career, he provided strategic leadership and guidance on major projects in the UK and overseas, helping to deliver sustainable solutions to complex environmental and infrastructure challenges.

His portfolio included work on major regeneration and infrastructure schemes such as HS2, the regeneration of Gatwick Airport landfill sites, harbour regeneration projects in Cornwall, farmland regeneration initiatives in China and the establishment of the UK's first waste treatment centre in Wolverhampton.

In addition to his professional achievements, Neil played a significant role in supporting the University of Wolverhampton. He shared his expertise through lectures and leadership talks, provided industry insight and strategic advice, opened opportunities through his extensive international network and helped connect the University with organisations and institutions in the UK and abroad.

Neil also championed student employability, creating placement, work experience and career opportunities for University of Wolverhampton students over many years. He supported recruitment events, sponsored projects, provided graduation prizes and employed numerous graduates and students, with a particular focus on encouraging opportunities for underrepresented and disadvantaged learners.

His ongoing support extended to the National Brownfield Institute, where he provided expert advice to help shape its strategic direction and future development. He also contributed to industrial advisory boards and worked closely with academic colleagues to bring real-world industry perspectives into the student experience.

Throughout his career, Neil has also been actively involved in charitable initiatives supporting young people through education, entrepreneurship and skills development programmes. His commitment to widening access to opportunity and inspiring the next generation of leaders reflected the values at the heart of the University of Wolverhampton.

The award recognised Neil's exceptional achievements in his field, his longstanding relationship with the University and his commitment to developing future professionals through mentorship, leadership and industry engagement.
