This course is designed to provide you with a sound knowledge of the key concepts, theories, practices and principles within the discipline of construction management; to evaluate their application into the industrial environment and to give you the necessary skills to become a Chartered Construction Manager. The course will concentrate on the main aspects of this discipline, which focus on the need to deliver projects on time, to the stated quality and within budget. These areas include: overall construction project management and planning, contract administration and dispute resolution; pre-contract studies; and construction technology and materials. You will undertake field trips and carry out practical case studies covering on-site construction activities.
The course covers the essential elements of site, project and construction management. Modules focus on acquiring and applying construction management skills relating to site surveying, site organisation, project planning and control, on-site decision making, management and liaison with site personnel, construction professionals and client representatives. The course enables you to identify and apply key aspects of construction management, whilst also understanding how to implement your technical knowledge to develop practical and creative management solutions that meet existing working practices and relevant legislative frameworks. You will be encouraged and supported to secure an industrial placement.
Educational Aims of the course
The aim of this specialist course is to prepare graduates for their initial and continued employment in thediscipline of Construction Management within the Built Environment.
Thus the course will:
- address the construction industry’s demands for graduates who can apply the principles of construction management to construction projects.
- enable students to pursue professional careers in construction at a level which requires the exercise of judgement, initiative and the ability to make informed construction management decisions reflecting a responsible ethical and sustainable outlook.
- equip students with a detailed understanding of the key principles of construction management, underpinned with knowledge of construction technology, digital construction and innovations, law, business and finance, enabling the application of these areas to construction projects.
- require students to participate in group projects where other team members are drawn from a range of cognate construction disciplines.
- develop the ability to investigate, research and report into familiar and unfamiliar subject areas, thereby enhancing the student’s ability to evaluate and critique construction management principles.
- provide the opportunity to apply the construction knowledge and skills already gained in an appropriate industrial environment, thereby broadening the students’ skills and knowledge of construction management and construction multi-disciplinary procedures and practices.
