Researcher shortlisted for prestigious ‘Bone Idol’ Award

A researcher at the University of Wolverhampton has been recognised for their outstanding contribution to the primary bone cancer community.
As part of The Bone Idols 2024, Dr Mark Morris, who works within the Research Institute of Healthcare Science (RIHS), has been shortlisted for the Researcher of the Year Award.
The Bone Idols Awards were set-up by the Bone Cancer Research Trust in 2021 to celebrate those who show exceptional dedication to improving the lives of bone cancer patients.
The Bone Cancer Research Trust was established in 2006 and is now the leading charity dedicated to fighting primary bone cancer.
The charity’s mission is to save lives and improve outcomes for people affected by primary bone cancer through research, information, awareness, and support.
Dr Zoe Davison, Head of Research, Information & Support at the Bone Cancer Research Trust, said: “The Bone Cancer Research Trust developed the first award ceremony for the sarcoma community, with the aim to inspire a continuation of the excellence shown by researchers like Mark that will help retain the brightest minds in the field.
“Mark is the exact type of unsung hero these awards are here to recognise. The difference he will make through his research cannot be underestimated, and we are delighted he has been nominated in this category.”
Dr Morris said: “I am delighted to be shortlisted for researcher of the year in the Bone Idols awards. I am not the only person involved in this work and would like to thank Hafid Omar and Lynda Birch who, with me, make up the Wolverhampton bone cancer research team. Our work investigates the causes of rare bone cancers; we are concentrating on finding new ways to diagnose and treat these tumours. Our work is only possible thanks to funding we receive from the Bone Cancer Trust, a fabulous organisation that, in addition to fundraising, brings researchers, patients and their families together as a community.”
To mark the weekend of World Cancer Day, winners will be announced at an awards presentation evening on Saturday 3rd February 2024 at the Queens Hotel, Leeds.
Attendees will be joined by fascinating guest speaker: broadcaster, scientist, and best-selling author Professor Alice Roberts.
Fascinated by human biology and diseases of the bone, Professor Roberts is an accomplished speaker and presenter who is widely known for her appearances on Channel 4’s Time Team, BBC’s Coast, and Digging for Britain.
