Over twenty students from across the West Midlands stepped into the shoes of crime scene investigators this summer, taking part in a hands-on CSI Summer School hosted by the University of Wolverhampton and facilitated by Rebecca Flanagan of the Forensic Science team in collaboration with West Midlands Police.

Held at the University’s Locard crime scene house, the immersive experience gave students aged 16–18 from the local community a taste of real-world forensic science. From evidence recovery and DNA analysis to digital forensics and fingerprint comparison, participants explored the full spectrum of investigative techniques used in solving complex cases.

The highlight of the event was a simulated suspicious death case, where students worked in teams to analyse evidence, identify suspects, and present their findings through detailed poster presentations. Their collaboration, communication, and critical thinking impressed staff and professionals alike.

“The Forensic Science Masterclass came about as a result of our partnership with West Midlands Police,” said Rebecca Flanagan, Forensic Science Senior Lecturer. “We already work together on research projects and guest lectures, and we wanted to build on that partnership and focus on positive action to widen participation within the local community.

“We approached students that we felt might have an interest in forensic science and were considering further education or pursuing career opportunities in the field.”

“We are proud to say that one attendee was so inspired by the experience that they attended the University’s August Open Day to find out more about the course and how to apply.”

Students also had the chance to speak directly with West Midlands Police forensic professionals, gaining insight into career pathways and the diverse roles within forensic services, as well as university staff about Forensic Science degree courses.

The CSI Summer School is part of a wider programme of Forensic Science Masterclasses run by the University for regional schools and colleges, aimed at sparking interest in STEM careers and supporting young people from underrepresented backgrounds.
