  • The only mechanical engineering masters here with a formally assessed placement. Where the standard MSc encourages live industrial projects “where possible,” this course builds a 30-credit Professional Work Experience and Development module directly into your award.

  • A dissertation that can be shaped by real experience. Because your placement sits within your programme of study, your 60-credit dissertation can be directly informed by problems and projects you encounter on placement.
  • The same digital manufacturing specialism, with employability built in. Industry 4.0, sustainable additive manufacturing and advanced machining sit alongside a structured route into the workplace — depth and direct experience in a single course.
  • A single, defined 18-month full-time structure. Rather than a loosely defined “placement year,” your Professional Practice module has a clear 26-week length and sits within a course built around your dissertation and specialist modules.

What happens on the course?

The taught modules come first: Design Optimisation and Simulation and Industry 4.0 in your first semester, followed by Sustainable Additive Manufacturing Applications and Applied High-Speed Machining. From there, the course moves into its defining feature — a 26-week Professional Practice placement, delivered through a dedicated, assessed module, alongside a 60-credit dissertation that runs throughout your studies.

  • You choose between two placement routes. A Research Placement embeds you in a University of Wolverhampton research centre or institute for 26 weeks — a strong fit if you’re considering a research or academic career. A Vocational Placement puts you full-time with an external employer, drawing on the School’s links with local, national and international companies.
  • Be realistic about placement availability. A limited number of Research Placements are guaranteed and allocated first come, first served; Vocational Placements are competitive, employer-led, and cannot be guaranteed — though many are paid.
  • Your placement is formally assessed, not just experienced. You’ll build a portfolio recording the tasks you undertake and the skills you develop, turning workplace learning into credit-bearing academic evidence.
  • Teaching follows the same applied model as our standard MSc: lectures, seminars and laboratory work in dedicated IT and engineering facilities, alongside seminars from industry practitioners who can speak directly to your placement and project choices.
  • Assessment blends coursework, practical work and your dissertation, so your final award reflects sustained technical and professional development, not a single exam performance.

As with our standard MSc, every module maps to course-level learning outcomes built around the UK Engineering Council’s AHEP framework — but here, your placement adds a further layer of applied, workplace-tested skill. By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Apply advanced mathematics, statistics and engineering science to solve complex problems at the forefront of mechanical engineering practice.
  • Formulate and analyse complex problems, using sound engineering judgement to work with data and information that may be uncertain or incomplete.
  • Select and apply computational and analytical modelling techniques, critically evaluating their limitations in both academic and workplace settings.
  • Design original solutions to complex problems, balancing societal, user, business and commercial needs alongside health, safety, sustainability and industry codes of practice.
  • Evaluate the environmental and societal impact of engineering solutions across their full lifecycle, and identify ways to minimise adverse effects.
  • Operate professionally in a real workplace or research environment, reflecting critically on your own performance and development through a structured placement portfolio.
  • Communicate complex engineering matters clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, including colleagues, supervisors and placement employers.

These fees relate to new entrants only for the academic year indicated for entry onto the course, any subsequent years of study may be subject to an annual increase, usually in line with inflation.

Students should normally be educated to honours Degree level, with a minimum classification of 2:2 in Mechanical Engineering, General Engineering, Technology, Physical Sciences or a closely related derivative.

RPL will be granted, if appropriate, as part of the admissions process and then ratified by the FSE RPL committee. All non-standard applicants to this course will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. In this instance, substantial and demonstrable professional experience can substitute for graduate status.

    Your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

    We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.


    Financial Hardship:

    Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
