Alumnus Spotlight: Kaj Pedersen – from Computer Science Graduate to Global Tech Leader
Kaj Pedersen, who graduated with a BSc in Computer Science in 1988, has reached an incredible milestone in his career: becoming a Fellow of the British Computer Society (BCS). This is one of the highest honours in the computing profession, recognising individuals who have made a lasting impact on the industry.
Now living on the west coast of the United States, Kaj works as a strategic technology advisor, following an impressive role as Chief Technology Officer at AstrumU in Washington State. His journey from university to global influence reflects the ambition and creativity that define our alumni community.
The Fellowship isn’t just a title - it’s a recognition of decades spent driving innovation, mentoring talent, and leading with integrity. Kaj’s career highlights include helping raise over $32 million for start-ups, securing six U.S. patents for AI-powered technology, and setting international standards to keep data secure and trustworthy. He’s worked on projects that changed industries, from financial trading systems to hospital-based clinical platforms and even helped launch Seattle’s first software innovation studio backed by Gates Ventures.
Most recently, as Chief Technology Officer of AstrumU, Kaj focused on using AI to connect education with career opportunities, creating secure, privacy-first tools that help people unlock their potential. Today, he advises emerging tech ventures, helping founders turn bold ideas into real-world impact.
Kaj credits his time at University of Wolverhampton for giving him a strong foundation and a practical approach to technology:
“The most important lesson I gained from university was the understanding that technology should be applied meaningfully, rather than pursued for its own sake. This practical, commercially minded approach has been instrumental in my career.”
A placement with British Coal’s IT department gave him the hands-on experience that launched his career during a tough job market, ultimately paving the way for his global success.
His story is a powerful reminder of what our graduates can achieve. Kaj’s Fellowship is not only a personal triumph but also a testament to the influence and excellence of our alumni community worldwide.
