Final-year nursing students mark milestone at Walsall Campus
Final‑year nursing students at the University’s Walsall Campus came together to celebrate a key milestone in their studies, as they marked their final theory day on campus before transitioning into professional practice.
The celebration took place on 31 March 2026 and brought together students from Group 123 on the pre‑registration nursing course. Organised by Year Lead Helen Campbell, the event provided an opportunity to reflect on achievements, recognise progress, and look ahead to the next stage of the students’ nursing careers.
The occasion was further enhanced by a visit from Mel Roberts, Group Chief Nursing Officer and Director of Infection Prevention and Control at The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, and Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust.
Mel joined students to share her personal nursing journey, offering insight into career progression and the wide range of pathways available within the profession. Her talk prompted discussion around future roles, career planning and preparing for interviews as students approach qualification.
Speaking after the event, Mel Roberts said:
“It was a privilege to join the celebrations of the final‑year student nurses and to talk about my journey to becoming a Chief Nursing Officer. The students were professional and asked thoughtful questions about future jobs and interview planning. I was pleased to support them in ensuring they are well prepared to secure the right opportunities as they qualify.”
Lorraine Diegnan, Principal Lecturer for Pre‑Registration Nursing in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Wolverhampton, added:
“We were delighted that Mel could join us on campus and take time out of her busy schedule to speak with our final‑year students. Her contribution was extremely valuable, particularly the sharing of her professional experience, and she provided comprehensive responses to the questions raised by the cohort.”
The event highlighted the University of Wolverhampton’s strong links with regional NHS partners and its commitment to preparing confident, capable graduates ready to meet the demands of modern healthcare.
