Graduate creates artwork for major European retail campaign
A University graduate is reaching audiences across Europe after creating the central artwork for a large‑scale campaign led by international cosmetics brand Lush.
Nayia Balatsou, who studied Illustration at the University of Wolverhampton’s School of Arts from 2019 to 2022, was commissioned by Lush to design the lead illustration for a European campaign delivered by the company in partnership with civil sea rescue organisation Sea Watch.
The campaign ran throughout March 2026 across 157 Lush stores in 15 countries. Nayia’s illustration formed the visual centre of the campaign, appearing in large‑scale shop window displays, in‑store installations and printed materials across participating stores.
The artwork depicts people at sea supporting one another, with messages of family, equality and love written on the boat, themes identified by the artist as central to the brief she was commissioned to respond to. A pink life jacket shown in the image reflects a limited‑edition Lush fundraising product associated with the campaign.
Reflecting on the opportunity, Nayia said:
“Illustration has always felt like a way to give a voice to stories that matter. Being invited to create artwork for an international campaign at this scale was both a privilege and a responsibility. I wanted the image to centre humanity and connection, and to encourage people to pause and reflect.”
Nayia credits her time at the University of Wolverhampton with helping to build the creative skills and confidence needed to take on professional commissions at an international level.
“Despite studying through the peak of the Covid‑19 pandemic, my time at the University of Wolverhampton was incredibly formative,” she said. “I especially valued the chance to work on real briefs for real clients, which gave me insight into how the creative industries operate. Exploring different media, from digital illustration to hands‑on printmaking, was invaluable.”
After graduating, Nayia approached Lush independently with her portfolio and was subsequently selected to work on the Spring 2026 campaign, marking a significant early career milestone.
The University of Wolverhampton’s School of Arts is proud to see its graduates progressing into high‑profile creative roles, demonstrating how a creative education can support graduates to build successful careers within the cultural and creative industries.
