MsC psychology alum, Leon Mitchelle, dressed in a suit, stands against a white brick wall. An award is on the table to his side.

The University is proud to celebrate MSc Psychology of Mental Health & Wellbeing graduate Leon Mitchell, whose reflective and thought‑provoking piece, “The internal cinema: Creativity as the compass of the self,” has been published by the British Psychological Society.

In the article, he writes, “I have spent a career peering through lenses and into blank pages, but my most profound discoveries have happened in the 'Deep Imagination' – that pre-verbal, internal theatre where the subconscious rehearses the future.” His work delves into the brain’s Default Mode Network and the powerful ways creativity acts as a navigational tool for the self, marking a significant contribution to psychological discourse.

Leon Mitchell is an award‑winning British author, director and member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), whose work examines the intersection of narrative theory and the human condition. His creative practice is deeply rooted in his academic foundation, enabling him to dismantle and interpret the complexities of purpose, identity and existential meaning within his scripts. His MSc thesis, The internal cinema: Creativity as the compass of the self,  is available via ResearchGate.

Reflecting on his academic pursuits, Leon said: "My educational journey with the University of Wolverhampton has been a significant part of my personal growth, and the British Psychological Society remains a constant source of inspiration. One of the most profound tools we have is the imagination. Combined with structured education and creative collaboration, it allows us to think without boundaries and turn ambitious ideas into reality."
