University hosts successful Varsity 2026 at Walsall Campus
The University of Wolverhampton welcomed students, staff, and visitors to Walsall Campus Sports Centre on Wednesday 25 March 2026 for this year’s highly anticipated Varsity 2026 event – the third consecutive year the competition has taken place in partnership with University College Birmingham (UCB) and Newman University.
Bringing together sporting talent and school spirit from across the region, Varsity 2026 showcased a full day of competitive fixtures including touch rugby, netball, women’s and men’s football, basketball, dodgeball, badminton, mixed volleyball, and cheerleading.
Nearly 80 University of Wolverhampton students took part throughout the day – a 10% increase on last year – reflecting continued growth in engagement and enthusiasm among the student community. Alongside athletes, students were also involved in sports therapy, massage, first aid, and placement roles, gaining valuable hands‑on experience in support of the event.
Although competition was close throughout, University College Birmingham emerged as overall winners, with the University of Wolverhampton and Newman University tying for second place by a narrow margin.
Lauren Bowman, Sport Development Assistant at WLV Sport, who co‑ordinated the event alongside colleagues and partner institutions, said:
“Varsity 2026 fulfilled its aim of increasing student engagement by fostering a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere that encouraged active involvement from both participants and spectators. Throughout the day, the event helped students develop important skills such as teamwork, communication, and resilience. It also provided valuable experiences that built confidence, promoted sportsmanship, and supported mental well-being by offering a fun, social, and active break from academic pressures. Overall, the day demonstrated how such events can increase participation, strengthen school spirit, and leave a lasting positive impact on students.”
Sarah Wood, Head of Sport and Physical Activity at the University of Wolverhampton, added: “The continued success of Varsity reflects the commitment of both organisers and students to expanding inclusive sporting opportunities across the institution.”
