University students gain global insights on football culture during Espanyol FC exchange
Six Football Coaching students from the University have returned from an immersive cultural and sporting exchange at Espanyol FC in Spain. The weekend trip formed part of the University’s ongoing commitment to providing real‑world learning experiences that broaden students’ professional horizons in the international sports industry.
During the visit, students toured Espanyol’s stadium and facilities, attended presentations delivered by club staff, and gained first-hand insight into the coaching and playing philosophies that underpin professional football in Spain. The trip was organised in partnership with Birmingham County FA and SLT Travel and was fully supported by the University.
Second‑year student Cobie reflected on the value of the experience, saying:
“It’s nice to see professional football clubs in other parts of the world and help open up to where we can work in the future.”
Senior Lecturer in Football and Coaching, Russ Smith, who coordinated the exchange, said the programme plays an important role in enhancing student development:
“These opportunities expose our students to different coaching methods, club cultures, and international career pathways. It’s a fantastic way to help them build confidence, networks, and ambition for working abroad.”
Lisa Luzajic, Outward Mobility Officer, University of Wolverhampton added:
"Through WLV partnerships like our Santander Employability funding, we're opening doors for students to gain real-world experience on the global stage , from the classroom to the training grounds of professional football clubs like RCD Espanyol."
The University continues to invest in global mobility initiatives for students, with opportunities to gain experience in sports environments around the world.
