Wolverhampton launches new degree model with embedded professional placements
The University of Wolverhampton is doing degrees differently, transforming the university experience with the introduction of a groundbreaking professional development framework that guarantees every undergraduate student a student a credit-bearing professional placement opportunity in their second year*.
Launching in September 2026, this initiative establishes Wolverhampton as one of the first universities in the UK to embed professional experience at this scale. Unlike traditional "optional" placements or opportunities, this new framework makes professional development a core pillar of the academic journey, accounting for 30 credits - a full quarter of the second-year award - across all undergraduate subjects. Taught Postgraduate students also benefit from guaranteed placements, which would be taken in addition to their modules.
Real Experience. Real Advantage.
Developed in partnership with industry leaders, alumni, and academic specialists, the framework moves beyond the classroom to ensure students are career-ready from day one. The module provides a flexible, inclusive pathway to industry-standard skills through:
- Professional work placements:Employer-hosted learning and immersive experiences.
- Live Industry Projects:Solving real-world challenges set by active businesses.
- Employer-designed Assessment:Assignments designed by industry professionals to mirror workplace demands.
- Global Networking:Tailored professional insights and connections within each subject area.
Whatever their chosen course, every student will now graduate with a CV backed by proven experience should they wish to (with the only exceptions being research degrees and those offered via partners).
Professor Gill Knight, Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Wolverhampton, said:
“We know that employers value graduates with practical, applied experience. By offering this substantial professional development option, we are empowering students to shape their own pathway - gaining workplace ready skills, connections and confidence at a level rarely seen elsewhere in the sector.”
Mike Ryan, Chief Executive Officer, Essist Omikron Ltd added: “Students think differently to us and we need that difference. Professional development placements are a great starting point for employers and a great way of assessing whether this person is for you.”
This new model supports the University’s mission to enhance employability, strengthen partnerships and ensure graduates leave prepared for the demands of industry. Employers partnering with the University will benefit from motivated students who can contribute to innovation and delivery while gaining invaluable insight.
