Updated on 1 January 2021

This week the Government issued new guidance which impacts your return to your studies in the New Year. New tougher restrictions are now in place in many parts of the UK.  This includes Wolverhampton and Walsall (now in tier 4) and Telford (now in tier 3).  Information about what this means is available on our local restrictions webpages and the Gov.uk website.

The Government has also reiterated the requirement for all students to be tested for Covid-19  ahead of them returning to campus. As previously communicated, we are working with our local authority partners on the testing of students for Covid-19. More information can be found in the Student Update: Covid-19 January 2021 Testing, which was sent to all students on 17 December.

Michelle Donelan MP, Minister of State for Universities, has met with Vice-Chancellors to outline further details and has written a letter to all students, which you can access here

During January, we will ensure that facilities and support continue to be available for students in accommodation and those who need access to study spaces and PCs.

Phased return to on campus teaching in January 2021 - Updated on 1 January

The Government has now expanded the list of taught postgraduate courses that can return to on-campus teaching from 4 January. These courses are listed below. Please check your timetable in the MyWLV app to see when your first day of teaching on campus is.

All other taught postgraduate programmes will NOT be back on campus before 25 January at the earliest (subject to Government review on the 18 January).

Most Foundation and Undergraduate programmes do not start until the 25 January. Exceptionally, there may be some Nursing and other Health undergraduate programmes which have an earlier start and if so, the start date you were given before Christmas remains in place. Students on the Sports programmes that were due to start on campus on 4 January will now not return to campus before 25 January.

Postgraduate research students can continue with their studies as planned and access to labs on campus is permitted.

International Students

If you are studying on a tier 4 or student route visa you are required, by the Home Office and the University, to attend all your timetabled classes (both on campus and online) and to be fully engaged with your course. Poor attendance or failure to engage with your programme may impact your visa and your permission to remain in the UK. If you are withdrawn through this procedure, your visa will be cancelled, and you will be required to leave the UK.

It is important that you maintain regular attendance on your programme of study and fulfil your programme's academic requirements. As well as attending online classes, you must engage with your course through Canvas. Attendance at all timetabled events is monitored via an electronic register system compiled by your lecturers.

If you are looking for help and advice for anything related to your course (such as leave of absence, extenuating circumstances or assignment hand-in) you should contact your Faculty Student Services on the e:Vision Helpdesk, which will reopen from 4 January. To access support outside your course, please email internationalsupport@wlv.ac.uk, with your student number.

Campus services and facilities reopening on 4 January

The University will reopen its facilities from Monday 4 January including the library, study spaces, PC areas and catering, for those students engaging with face to face teaching and any student who requires access to a study space or PC to complete their online learningPlease note that in line with tier 4 guidance, the Walsall Campus gym will remain closed. For the latest updates, please visit our Road to Reopening @WLV

Performing arts students will have the opportunity to access performance spaces on campus individually as part of their course. We are currently working on how this will be managed safely, and more information will be shared soon.

Please keep checking your emails and reading these updates. We are committed to keeping students up to date. We do this by email, on our social media channels (InstagramTwitter and Facebook) and the University Student News web page.

Visit our dedicated Covid-19 webpages for information on how you can stay safe and help protect our University community during the pandemic. This includes information on our Covid-19 Reporting Procedures and the latest guidance on local tier restrictions.

Stay safe, be kind.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor
