This is the first profile of our University security team which will be used to highlight key areas where the security team support the safety of everyone on University campuses. Paul Chaddock is the Deputy Security Operations Manager and explains his roles and responsibilities at the University.

Paul Chaddock joined the University of Wolverhampton just over 12 months ago as the Deputy Security Operations Manager following 17 years of experience as a security manager. Paul has been married for 21 years and is an avid film and music fan, in particular his fondness of the James Bond films and his collected memorabilia from the films. Within Paul’s security experience, he has covered many industries including banking security, retail, logistics and the security team at Derby University supporting him to broaden his knowledge across a whole range of security sectors.

Following his range of experience, Paul said he was waiting for the right opportunity to return to university security and now confirms that he “really loves working for the University” and describes the University as “the right place for me to work”. The role of Deputy Security Operations Manager requires Paul to manage all day-to-day security operations and oversees both the day and night security teams and their responsibilities. When Paul isn’t enjoying his personal time keeping fit and reading, he supports the security team of 54 security officers, 5 team leaders and 5 supervisors in their vast and varying tasks and responsibilities.

Within the University security team, there are some security officers with an impressive nearly 30 years of service to the University. Paul says he enjoys “working in security because it’s unpredictable and every day is different.” Paul and his teams have a whole range of responsibilities ranging from customer service of being person-facing and liaising with students, staff, and stakeholders on their patrols or over the intercom system, to supporting the Safeguarding team in sharing intelligence and over-seeing any security matters across all campuses and student accommodation. The University security team are all first aid, first response and security industry trained which supports them when responding to any security issues whether during locking up, noticing something concerning on the 24/7 surveillance of over 1000 cameras or when leading the fire evacuations. Students are supported by the security team who are their out-of-hours contact, vet party applications, and support mental health and well-being when performing their duties.

Paul and his manager, Chris Robinson, both sit on the panel for the Wolverhampton Business Improvement District (BID) and use the Link Radio which allows security across all of the City’s businesses to share intelligence to best keep everyone on-site safe. This relationship has also led to the recent introduction of the Ask for Angela initiative at the University.
