Student Blog: Studying with mental ill health

In this blog for University Mental Health Day, an anonymous postgraduate student shares their experience of studying with mental ill health.

As an undergraduate student, I was the first in my family to attend university. So gaining a First Class Degree in Psychology was more than just an achievement to me. I feel I would not have done this if not for the support and dedication of many staff. As an individual with ADHD, Autism and Dyslexia, with long term depression, I have frequently found it difficult to achieve my goals or pursue academic interests. I have spent most of my working life in jobs not requiring qualifications, and passed over many opportunities due to low self-esteem and low self-confidence.

The University of Wolverhampton has opened doors for me that I never thought possible. I feel I have the confidence to recognise my own dedication and hard work now, due to all the encouragement received by staff, which I have found especially supportive when going through mental health crises. Even now as a postgraduate student, and going through a mental health crisis requiring more specialist support and treatment, I still feel safe and confident due to the support received by my supervisors, and the wider university. As a survivor of childhood abuse, I frequently find it challenging to trust people, never mind feeling safe, so I see it as a testament to the staff of the University of Wolverhampton that I am able to feel safe, supported, and encouraged.
