Black Country and Telford and Wrekin Boys' Impact Hub

Boys’ Impact is a national movement dedicated to addressing the gap in educational outcomes for boys and young men eligible for Free School Meals (FSM). The educational progression rate for boys and young men eligible for Free School Meals is 23.4% as opposed to 37.7% who aren’t. We follow an evidence-led and strengths-based approach, to create an ecosystem in research, policy and practice.

About Boys’ Impact

Boys’ Impact was founded by Dr Alex Blower in 2023 to undertake strategic activity in research, policy and practice to support the outcomes of boys and young men through regional hubs in local educational, social and geographic contexts. The 10 Principles developed by the Taking Boys Seriously research team at Ulster University provide the foundation for this work.

The Taking Boys Seriously Principles:

  1. Recognise the primacy of relationship
  2. Demonstrate dignity and respect
  3. Utilise a “strengths-based approach” to learning
  4. Challenge and affirm masculine identities
  5. Promote positive mental health
  6. Identify blocks to boys learning
  7. Connect boys learning to context
  8. Engage meaningfully with boys
  9. Enable creative learning environments
  10. Value the voice of boys
