Science Re-Public comes back with a bang

Re-boot of the University’s flagship science communication event breaks down barriers between academia and our community.

On 27 January and 24 March the University’s only community facing Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) comedy event, Science Re-Public is returning to the Arena Theatre after a four year break.

Science Re-public is an event where academics from the Faculty of Science and Engineering are challenged to come out of their comfort zone and give a 20 minute public talk that’s suitable for anyone. No slides are allowed, audience participation is encouraged, jargon is banned and speakers can only use things to help them on stage that they can carry.

At each event hosted by the University Associate Professor for Engagement in STEM, Dr Martin Khechara, with the help of the audience academics, answers the most pressing, sometimes unusual and downright weirdest questions in science. The event uses the informal environment of the Tilstone Theatre along with stand-up comedy and a satirical look at the world of STEM to break down the walls of academia and the barriers that exist between the community and our University.

The host and creator of Science Re-Public, Dr Martin Khechara, said about the event: "Science-Re-Public follows that tried and tested model of science in the pub that you see in all good university towns. My aim is to break down barriers and give people science on their terms not just on ours! I want to show our community that learning in higher education can be amazing and inspirational and is something for everyone no matter who you are, where you come from or what you look like".

Science Re-Public represents the University of Wolverhampton’s commitment to excellent public engagement. If you are student or a member of staff and are interested in presenting at a future event please contact Martin Khechara on mpkhechar@wlv.ac.uk
