Education expert honoured by University

A leading education expert has been recognised by the University of Wolverhampton for his contribution to reform and transformation in the sector.
Gary Flanagan works at the heart of government as the Deputy Director at Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA).
He received an Honorary Fellowship for his contribution to education reform from the University during a graduation ceremony on Saturday, 11 September 2021.
Gary, who studied English at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “Studying English at Wolverhampton opened doors to different worlds. It took me from Chelmsley Wood and introduced me to the power of language which has been invaluable through my varied journey in education. The skills and confidence I gained at Wolverhampton helped me to believe in myself. I always enjoy returning to talk to students about their journeys. I urge all graduates to think big but to return to the University to help those who are following them.”
Gary joined the Infrastructure and Projects Authority in October 2020. Born and raised on the outskirts of Birmingham, he now lives in Coventry.
Having studied English at the University of Wolverhampton, Gary started his career teaching before moving into local authority advisory work. In 2008, as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme, he made the transition from local to national work as an education director and programme director.
Working on large-scale delivery and transformation programmes, such as the 30 hours’ childcare project, recently he has worked in technical education reform ensuring the timely delivery of T Levels.
Gary is increasingly interested in improving programme success through the targeted use of effective data, flexible planning, resourcing and effective risk and assurance activity. He is a dad to Martha and Kitty, and husband to Jane. He has recently started a graffiti-based arts company.
The University of Wolverhampton graduation ceremonies are taking place at the Grand Theatre in Wolverhampton from Thursday 9 September – Friday 17 September 2021.
The 17 ceremonies will see over 3,000 students who completed their studies in 2020 collect their awards.
It is the first time the University has held a graduation ceremony since December 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
