Civil Engineers return to Wolverhampton for a networking reunion

The University of Wolverhampton’s School of Architecture and Built Environment held a reunion event for Civil Engineering alumni at the £120 million Springfield Campus recently. 

The event saw graduates from across a range of years returning to Wolverhampton with Class of 2023 graduates joining other alumni from many years back. For those who graduated some time ago, the event presented an opportunity to see the Springfield Campus for the first time. 

The reunion involved a networking gathering over drinks and snacks, a tour of the Springfield Campus and a series of talks by alumni in the profession.  

Alumni talked about their student experience, their career journeys, challenges faced and also, gave some insights into working in the industry. Talks were delivered by Thomas Phillips, who now works at Turner & Townsend and Stephen Woodhams, employed by South Staffordshire Water.

One of the speakers, Adedapo Fasinro, now a Technical Manager at Toppesfield Limited, said: “Recently I had the privilege to go back to the University of Wolverhampton and speak about my career journey to the Civil Engineering Alumni. Albeit a short one, each year brings different life lessons, connections and knowledge. 

“I always enjoy sharing my experiences because I know at least one person will take something valuable from it. Seeing my old peers and lecturers immediately made me reflect on my progression throughout the years. I never thought I would graduate, let alone be thriving in my career. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how far you’ve come but little reminders like this make me excited for the future.”  

Dr Alaa Hamood, Head of the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “It was great to meet some of our former students and to learn about their amazing career Journeys and the progress they have made in life so far. The inspiring stories of our alumni are motivating both our new graduates and current students. We hope to run this alumni event again next year.” 

David Wedge, Deputy Head of Alumni Relations at the University, said: “It was lovely to welcome back so many Civil Engineering alumni back to campus for this event. A big thank you to our speakers on the night; they were excellent and truly inspiring. We are always keen to learn about the career journeys and successes of our alumni and encourage everyone to stay in touch and keep us updated.” 

After graduation, graduates become members of the Alumni Association and are encouraged to keep in touch, to take advantage of a wide range of benefits and support on offer, including a discount for postgraduate study.
