We are International: University committed to welcoming international students
The Department for Education has issued a video highlighting the value and contributions international students make to the United Kingdom.
Following a recent speech by the Secretary of State for Education Bridget Phillipson at the Embassy Education Conference, a short video has been released where she outlines how the UK Government will continue to support international students and that they should feel welcome to come and study in the UK.
The message for international students is that if they meet the criteria for entry to a UK University and enter the country on a student visa, the British government and the British people will welcome them. In the video, the Secretary of State also expresses her admiration for international students taking a leap of faith, developing new skills and chasing new horizons and confirmed her passion is for a Britain that looks outwards in optimism.
- A Britain that builds bridges of friendship with other nations
- A Britain that values the contribution of international students
The University of Wolverhampton offers a range of international degree programmes at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate level, allowing students to find the right course for them.
Every year, the University welcomes international students from over 130 nations, who join us to study at one of our campuses or partner institutions overseas.
Bashir Aminu, from Nigeria, started at the University by studying for a Foundation degree in Engineering before moving on to an Undergraduate degree in Architecture and then completing a Master’s degree in Architecture – graduating in 2022.
He said: “I realised that the University of Wolverhampton was a great place to study because it specialises in Architecture as well as focusing on regeneration and brownfield remediation – turning waste ground into relivable spaces. I also had some local ties in Wolverhampton so decided to study here.
“Studying at the University gave me a real insight into what real life work is like. We engaged with industry partners and worked with clients such as Sandwell Council on live projects.
“Everything that we studied at University related to the Wolverhampton Action Plan, covering sustainability and regeneration and, with the National Brownfield Institute next door, this really gave me an insight and in-depth knowledge of Architecture.”
Earlier this year, the University signed a new partnership agreement with the International Digital University, in Uzbekistan, to offer students the opportunity to study for degree courses in Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security and IT Technology.
Julius Odede, also from Nigeria, graduated with a First Class degree in Data Science from the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at the University. He developed an Artificial Intelligence chat bot to help potential applicants with course enquiries.
On his time at the University, Julius said: “My experience of learning at the University was fantastic, I met incredible people, my colleagues, my lecturers and there are a lot of learning resources available.
“I’m so proud to have graduated. I’m from Nigeria and I have family members who have graduated in Nursing from the University, and in my country we use the UK education system as a benchmark – I wanted to come to the source to learn from the source.
“I would say it’s never too late, you’re never too young and you’re never too old. If I can do it, you can do it. You have to keep learning and one thing I’ve learned at the University is that you have to keep learning for life.”
The University’s Global Opportunities Office is the first point of contact for International and Transnational Education students going through the application process to becoming a student.
