Wolverhampton students make their mark during the World Cup
As the football world turns its attention to the FIFA World Cup, 18 University students are making an impact of their own across North America - delivering coaching programmes that are changing lives while developing their own careers.
Through the University’s long-standing partnership with Challenger Sports, students have the opportunity to spend the summer coaching football across the United States and Canada. The partnership, which has flourished for more than five years, continues to provide invaluable international work experience, enabling students to apply their learning in real-world environments while developing their coaching, leadership and communication skills.
This summer, University of Wolverhampton students are working in communities stretching from Canada to California, with placements across Texas, Washington, Virginia, Oregon, Kansas and many other locations. The experience exposes students to different cultures, coaching philosophies and football environments, helping them grow both professionally and personally.
The programme reflects the University’s commitment to providing opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. By working with Challenger Sports, students gain hands-on experience delivering football sessions to thousands of young players, building confidence and enhancing their employability in the global sports industry.
Alongside the students, University lecturer Rus Smith - who himself worked as a Challenger Sports coach in 1999 - is supporting football development across North America this year. Rus is also working with University partner Wolves FC in both the USA and Canada, delivering coach education, supporting club development initiatives and strengthening international relationships that continue to create opportunities for future students.
Graduate Kai Johnson (Class of 2024) is leading coaching delivery for Wolves FC overseas, demonstrating a clear pathway from classroom to career within professional football coaching.
The combined presence of University staff and students across North America highlights the strength of the University’s international partnerships and its growing reputation for developing highly skilled coaches capable of working across the world.
With the World Cup inspiring millions, the University’s students are playing their part in growing the global game - sharing their knowledge, developing young players and representing the University of Wolverhampton with pride on the international stage.
As these students continue their coaching journeys, they are not only creating memorable experiences for the communities they serve, but also building the skills, confidence and global perspective that will shape the next generation of football professionals.
First-year Football Coaching student Zak Denton said:
“Going to the World Cup in Kansas City was an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience. The atmosphere was incredible, with a sea of bright yellow Ecuador shirts creating an amazing spectacle. Being there to see Curaçao earn their first-ever World Cup point is something I’ll always remember - the players’ and fans’ celebrations were unforgettable.”
Rich Rogers from Challenger Sports added:
“Challenger Sports has built a fantastic partnership with the University of Wolverhampton’s Football Foundation Degree in recruiting students for our summer soccer camps in the USA and Canada.
It’s been a real success to offer students contracts based on their strong coaching experience gained through their course and their clear understanding of delivering high-quality sessions.
Rus Smith’s background as a former Challenger coach gives students a real advantage, as he understands the standards required. A great example of this success is a University of Wolverhampton student recently receiving a ‘Coach of the Year’ award in 2025.
The impact these students have had within our coaching team has been outstanding, and we look forward to continuing our work with the University for many years to come.”
