Black Country Geopoetics, Talk and Workshop with Writer R.M. Francis

ArtsfestArtsfest 2020 / Black Country Geopoetics, Talk and Workshop with Writer R.M. Francis

Join R. M. Francis, Poet in Residence for the Black Country Geological Society, for this talk and writing workshop.

Based on his geopoetry project, The Chain Coral Chorus R.M. Francis will give a poet's eye view of Black Country landscapes and explore how the geology of the region can enable and energise new creative place-writing. Drawing on the work of Geopoets, Kenneth White, Norman Bissel and Don McKay this workshop will consider a Deep Time perspective on the industrial and post-industrial cultures of this region.

Francis will conclude this session with a reading from some of his geopoems.

This project has been resourced and facilitated by the University of Wolverhampton Doctoral College and their Early Career Research Award Scheme.

R. M. Francis is a lecturer in Creative and Professional Writing at the University of Wolverhampton where he completed his PhD. He's the author of five poetry pamphlet collections. His novel, Bella, was published by Wild Pressed Books, and Smokestack Books will publish his poetry collection, Subsidence, in December 2020. In 2019 he was the David Bradshaw Writer in Residence at the University of Oxford and is currently Poet in Residence for the Black Country Geological Society.
