Intellectual Property and the Music Industry: Mapping the Maze

Artsfest / Artsfest 2021 / Intellectual Property and the Music Industry: Mapping the Maze

Are the rules governing intellectual property law in the music industries clear and easy to follow? What are the types of works that get protection, and how is their value commercialised? Who is entitled to copyright protection and what does the owner get? Where is the line between inspiration and imitation? Does it matter?

Copyright law governs our rights, freedoms and limitations in using other people’s work. It also offers a bundle of rights to the author and owner of the musical works created. In this interactive workshop, the speaker explores the maze of the current intellectual property regime and focuses on the basic categories of creative works (musical, literary and sound recordings) as protected under copyright law in the UK, and the attached rights for owners (copyright) and authors (moral rights). Audience will get the opportunity to ask specific questions, related to all matters of intellectual property law (including trade marks).
