What happens during a Teaching Space Audit?

The Central Timetabling Unit (CTU) has responsibility for organising and managing Teaching Space Audits.

Space Audits are carried out by students from the University of Wolverhampton. 

  • Auditors use an iPad pre-loaded with an App that has been designed and built by the university to record the data. 
  • The auditors are given a specific route to follow and a time limit to complete that route. 
  • Each room on the route is checked twice within each hour by two different auditors who record whether rooms are in use or empty, and give an estimated occupancy. 

If both auditors record a room as being empty then it is identified as being not in use.  The App compares the results immediately with the data stored in the University's timetabling system and CTU can instantly produce reports to show frequency of use, occupancy and overall utilisation of each room. 

In 2013, the University of Wolverhampton Space Audit App was shortlisted for a Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award.
