New sports therapy course gets the thumbs up

A new sports therapy course at the University of Wolverhampton has received top accreditation from a leading national body.

The BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Therapy course teaches students to prevent injury and rehabilitate people back to optimum levels of fitness.

The new course has received accreditation by the professional body the Society of Sports Therapists.

A £250,000 specialist training facility is being created at the Walsall Campus for the new students.

The course involves the study of health, injury and disease to prepare patients for training, competition or even work. Students will gain applied practical skills in sport and remedial massage and plan and implement rehabilitation programmes.

Julian Smith, Principal Lecturer and Head of Curriculum for Sport at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “We’re really excited to be launching the new BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Therapy and are delighted to have received this accreditation from the Society of Sports Therapists.

“Students on this course will have opportunities to work with some of our key partners such as British Judo, Wolverhampton Wanderers FC and Walsall FC, as well as university sports teams to develop industry skills relevant to a career in sport and exercise therapy. This means our students will benefit from high quality training which uses the latest technology and professional practices to prepare them for a range of careers in sports injury prevention and rehabilitation.”

Professor Graham N Smith, Chairman of the Society of Sports Therapists, said: “The Society of Sports Therapists is really excited and proud to be working with the University of Wolverhampton and accrediting the new BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Therapy Course, due to commence in September 2020. The Society was really impressed with the fantastic new facilities that are being created at the Walsall Campus and knows that students will have a tremendous experience studying there. The Society now looks forward to working with the University.”

Students will also undertake placements to allow them to gain hands-on experience and mentoring in an applied sports and exercise therapy context.
