Frequently Asked Questions - International

If you are an international student, it is likely that you will have many questions about University in the UK. Below are some of the questions which we regularly receive, along with our answers.

Please note that entry requirements will vary depending on which programme you wish to apply for.

We accept a wide variety of international qualifications. If you’re not sure about which course you’d like to study, or have any questions about what we offer, please contact our team international@wlv.ac.uk

We advise you to apply as early as possible to maximise your chances of success. You should also take into consideration the time it takes to obtain visa clearance and make any other arrangements you need to before a lengthy stay in the UK.

There are three ways to apply: 

1) Direct to the University

You’ll need to complete an online application form and submit it, along with scans of your original academic transcripts and certificates. If you require any assistance our regional officers/managers will be able to support, please email our team:international@wlv.ac.uk 

2) Through a country representative (agent)

Our in-country representatives can help you make your application and apply for a visa, as well as offering important advice on travel, living in the UK and studying abroad.

3) Through UCAS

If you’re applying for an undergraduate degree or a Higher National Diploma (HND), you can apply through the UK’s Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). There is a charge for applying through UCAS - please see the UCAS website for full details and methods of payment.

As an EU or International applicant you will need to showcase your English language proficiency skills during your admissions process. 

We have a suite of courses that require differing English language proficiency, these requirements are there to ensure that you have the correct ability to achieve your desired qualification with us.

The checklist below outlines some of the types of documentation you may need to provide with your application:

  • Copy of passport/visa pages only
  • Academic transcript - Officially stamped and translated copies of your certificates and transcripts of previous study
  • Certificate of English proficiency – Official copies of proof of English language, including IELTS or GCSE English equivalent
  • Personal statement - One page explaining why you want to do this programme and why you want to study at the University of Wolverhampton)
  • Reference letters, or details of named referee - official academic references on letter headed or stamped paper

Please note, not every document may be required in your particular case.

You can still apply even if you haven't yet received your final transcript or your Certificate of English proficiency.

You will receive a conditional offer which will state what qualifications and grades you will need to achieve in order to meet our entry requirements. Once you have received evidence of obtaining your qualifications you can upload them to our E-Vision portal after which you will receive an unconditional offer once all conditions have been met.

All overseas applicants are required to pay a deposit or provide a satisfactory guarantee from your Embassy Sponsor.

India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Cameroon

After you have satisfied your offer conditions and secured an Unconditional place at the University of Wolverhampton you will be required to pay a 50% deposit for us to issue you with a CAS. You will then be required to pay the next 25% of the outstanding tuition fee balance at enrolment and then make a final 25% payment of the remaining tuition fee balance before semester 2 of teaching.

Nigeria

After you have satisfied your offer conditions and secured an Unconditional place at the University of Wolverhampton you will be required to pay a deposit payment of £5,500 for us to issue you with a CAS. 

Additionally, the remaining balance of your tuition fees will be divided into two equal instalments. The first instalment, amounting to 50% of the total fees remaining after £5,500 GBP, will be due at the beginning of the subsequent semester (Semester 2)  while the remaining amount will be due at the beginning of the third semester. 

Rest of the World

After you have satisfied your offer conditions and secured an Unconditional place at the University of Wolverhampton you will be required to pay a deposit payment of £4000 for us to issue you with a CAS. You will then be required to pay 50% of the outstanding tuition fee balance at enrolment and then make a final payment of the remaining tuition fee balance before semester 2 of teaching.

If you are paying by bank transfer then the University does not issue a standard receipt of funds so you will need to check with your bank the payment has cleared, if you are paying online or over the phone direct to the University then you should receive payment confirmation from the University.

All overseas applicants are required to pay a deposit or provide a satisfactory guarantee from your Embassy Sponsor.

There are several ways in which you can pay your fees. Note that all payments should be made in pounds sterling. Once you have paid your deposit and secured your visa, you may want to pay more or all of your remaining tuition fees before you leave home.

It is important to carefully consider the financial implications of studying in the United Kingdom. In additional to paying tuition fees, you will need to cover your living expenses, including accommodation, food, heating, travel, books and stationery.

Living costs
 
All students must provide UKVI with evidence they can pay their living costs, maintenance, and tuition fees. You will need to provide evidence of 9 months of living expenses at £1,023 per month (£9,207 per year).
 
  • If your course lasts for less than nine months, you will need £1,023 per month of the course (eg. for six months, you need £6,138). Remember: this is in addition to the outstanding balance of your tuition fees.
  • If you will be bringing dependants with you to the UK, you will also need to meet a financial requirement as part of your visa application. Dependants are required to have £680 per month (e.g. £6,120 for a nine month course or £4,080 for a six month course).

The UK Border Agency requires you to have a minimum amount of savings in your bank account before it will issue you with a student visa to enable you to study in the UK. More information can be found on the UKCISA website

Part-time study options are not available for international students due to visa requirements

All students will be able to apply for their accommodation by using the on line booking system through e-vision (go to the navigation bar and click on My Tasks) the instructions on how to apply are online. We strongly advise that you have booked and/or secured your accommodation before you travel to the UK. We do not have accommodation on campus for cohabiting couples or families. Student accommodation usually provides single study bedrooms which are suited to individual students. Further information on university accommodation can be found on our webpages.

We want to reassure you that we are closely monitoring international responses around the world and this might impact your ability to start your studies in September such as what is happening in your home country; travel restrictions globally; the safety of international travel and visa processing availability. For your CAS to be released, you may need to attend a pre cas interview carried out by the University of Wolverhampton. 

The Global Opportunities Office host weekly workshops to support applicants and agents with the Pre CAS Interview, register online Webinar Registration - Zoom

If you have already attended your pre cas interview and have been successful in meeting your conditions, then your agent will be able to request for your CAS. You will need to have your bank statement to show your funds and a valid tuberculosis certificate.  

You need to meet the conditions on your offer letter before you can proceed to the next stage – CAS Stage​

The money will be required to be in the student’s own bank account or parents/legal guardian for 28 days minimum before they apply for their visa. This is checked our dedicated team before releasing CAS​

 

 

You will still need to pay the immigration health surcharge when you make your Student Route visa application. This entitles you to use the NHS once you are in the UK.

The process of arranging your CAS number will begin when it is less than three months before your course starts and when you have accepted an Unconditional offer.

Note: Students should try to make sure they are ready for a visa application. This includes maintaining suitable funds in their accounts in readiness for a visa application, and applying for a TB certificate if applicable.

You will need to obtain a Student Route visa before you can travel to the UK.

You cannot apply for a Student Route visa without a CAS, the university is required to monitor your academic engagement regardless of whether you have applied for or received your visa.

Once you have accepted your unconditional offer of a place, we will check your documentation to ensure that you will be eligible to obtain a visa and subject to you having the appropriate finances in place, we will issue you with a CAS. We will be monitoring your progress through your attendance, engagement with the online sessions via canvas and other resources we are offering. We will also monitor your submission to assessments. You must maintain both your attendance and your engagement in order to maintain compliance with the conditions of your visa.

If you are starting your course online in your home country, we will monitor your engagement and this will be taken into account.

Your responsibilities:

  • Provide us with your passport and visa/biometric ID card when you enrol on e-vision
  • Keep your contact details up to date with us and with the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI).
  • Ensure that you attend all of your classes, tutorials and lectures
  • Ensure that you seek permission for any absences, if you are leaving the country you MUST let the university know.
  • Check your University WLV email account regularly for information and updates.
  • Don't not work over 20 hours per week. 

You also need to comply with University requirements to ensure we are able to continue sponsoring you as student. If you don’t follow these conditions your visa may be cancelled and you may have to leave the UK and you could also have future visa applications refused. 

To enrol you need to go to the e:Vision log in, add your 7 digit student number ID ******* and the password you would have been asked to create when you last logged in. You must enrol by the deadline given on e:Vision

Enrolment instructions

Enrolment will be available closer to your course start date. Before you enrol, you must register for an IT account. Once you have accepted the terms and conditions for using our IT services, you will be able to continue with your enrolment. Once you are registered, you can enrol.

  • Login to your e:Vision account.
  • Follow the Enrolment link and the instructions on screen.
  • You will be prompted to enter your personal and contact information, including uploading a copy of your passport and visa to your record. Please make sure that your details are up-to-date, as details you provide will be used to contact you. Check that the details of your course and fee status are correct.
  • Once all this is complete, you can go ahead and confirm your enrolment!

Problems with E-Vision

If you have problems logging on, once you click forgotten your password a temporary one will be sent to your email address that you used to register. Once you have this you can then log in and then reset your password.

If you don’t remember your password, just use the forgotten password link and follow the instructions and a new temporary one will be sent to your gmail/hotmail email address you have provided us on your application. 

If you have any further issues please log a helpcall using the link on your enrolment page, you must complete all of the tiles.

You will need to download myWLV app– myWLV is where you will find your personalised timetable. It also offers you information about assessment deadlines, email, VLE topic subscriptions, and links to key resources. 

To enrol you need to go to the e:Vision log in, add your 7 digit student number ID ******* and the password you would have been asked to create when you last logged in. 

Log onto E-Vision

If you have problems logging on, once you click forgotten your password a temporary one will be sent to your email address that you used to register. Once you have this you can then log in and then reset your password.

Your Biometric Residence Permit will be delivered to the post office specified on the letter you will have received when your visa was granted.

If it is the Wolverhampton post office, it is quite close to both the University campus and to the train station. If you have a smartphone, you will be able to access walking directions from one of the mapping applications. Alternatively, you may wish to find directions on the internet before you travel to the post office.

Please note: if you are required to self-isolate for 14 days on arriving in the UK, you should make arrangements to collect your BRP card AFTER you have completed the self-isolation.

You do not need to worry about the requirement of collecting within 10 working days of arriving in the UK.

 

Opening a bank account

There are many banks with branches in Wolverhampton, and some offer special deals to students.

To open a UK bank account you will need at least your: passport ‘Letter of Introduction to UK Banking Facilities’. You can request this through e:Vision once you are fully enrolled.

How to get a bank letter?

Once you are enrolled they can download a copy of their Bank Letter through the ‘official letter’ tab on E-vision.

Please note, this will only be produced once so you should only request the bank letter when you are ready to print it or are going to visit the bank. If you need to request another bank letter- you will need to speak to your faculty student services

Incorrect name

If you would like to update your name on your student record because it is incorrect you will need to log a help desk call with the correct name and evidence of this ie. BRP/Passport photo
