Empowering communities programme #WolvesWellbeingandMe

24/03/2022

The University of Wolverhampton has secured funding from the City of Wolverhampton Council to deliver the #WolvesWellbeingandMe programme, which will provide insight into the mental health and wellbeing of people and communities across the city.

Informed by a review of locally available evidence and data, the programme will look to explore the experiences of different population groups during the Covid-19 pandemic and consider the things that have challenged their wellbeing and the resources people have drawn upon to stay well.

The #WolvesWellbeingandMe programme also represents an internal collaboration between the Institute for Community Research and Development, Centre for Psychological Research and College of Learning and Teaching and will be explored in three stages.

Clare Dickens MBE, Academic Lead for Mental Health and Wellbeing at the University of Wolverhampton, said;

“This project is just one of the many shining examples of how the University works in partnership with the City of Wolverhampton Council to serve the community in which the University has a physical presence. It aligns perfectly to one of the pillars of our new student mental health and wellbeing strategy for the University, a development also supported by public health colleagues, which will yield many opportunities for students.”

Dr Jamie Annakin, Principal Public Health Specialist at the City of Wolverhampton Council, said;

“This programme of work is vital in helping us understand the views of local people and communities, providing insight into how the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted on people’s lives, and the things people now feel are important in ensuring they can feel good and function well within our city.”

This work also supports the University’s recently launched Student Mental Health and Wellbeing strategy, where collaboration and working in partnership is a key pillar, alongside making use of relevant data and research.

How you can get involved

The #WolvesWellbeingandMe programme will also gather input through a mental health and wellbeing survey which people from across the city will be encouraged to complete so that we can further understand local people’s views on their mental health and wellbeing.

We would encourage staff and students to complete the survey and share it with their local contacts and communities. Anyone who completes the survey can enter into a prize draw to be in with a chance of winning up to £150 of vouchers.

Complete the survey

Professor Laura Caulfield, Director of the Institute for Community Research and Development, said;

“The #WolvesWellbeingandMe programme will allow communities to shape responses to mental health, based on their own experiences. This programme allows ICRD and our partners to support meaningful change in the communities we work with”

Dr Niall Galbraith, Acting Head of Psychology, said;

"This collaborative project will give the people of Wolverhampton a voice.  This won’t just be another survey where nothing happens afterwards it will serve as a foundation for the council’s mental wellbeing strategy. University of Wolverhampton students will join the research team, helping our graduates to be more skilled at working with communities.”

Dr Darren Chadwick, Reader in Applied Psychology, said;

“#WolvesWellbeingandMe is really important to help us find out about those groups who are overlooked and disadvantaged, including people with disabilities. The project will help us identify the main concerns and struggles these often excluded groups have had, and how we can work together with them to help them to flourish.”
